Amazon reported third-quarter earnings and revenue on Thursday that sailed past estimates.

Earnings per share was 94 cents vs. 58 cents expected while revenue came in at US$143.1 billion vs. US$141.4 billion expected.

In terms of the segment numbers, Amazon Web Services generated US$23.1 billion vs. US$23.2 billion in expected revenue and Advertising generated US$12.1 billion vs. US$11.6 billion in expected revenue.

Amazon said fourth-quarter sales, which include the key holiday period, will be between US$160 billion and US$167 billion. Analysts were expecting revenue of US$166.6 billion.

At the mid-point of its guidance range, revenue of US$163.5 billion would represent growth of 9.6% from US$149.2 billion a year earlier.

Revenue jumped 13% in the third quarter, a sign that the business is seeing some acceleration after a difficult 2022 that was marred by soaring inflation and rising interest rates.

Sales in Amazon’s core e-commerce business continued to recover, expanding 7% year over year, after growing 4% in the previous quarter.

The September quarter includes the results of this year’s Prime Day promotion, which took place in July.

Digital advertising continues to be a bright spot for Amazon, as third-party sellers and large brands bolster their ad spending to improve visibility in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

Ad revenue soared 26% from a year earlier.

In cloud, however, Amazon appears to be giving up some market share. Amazon Web Services, which leads Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, showed growth in the quarter of 12%. Microsoft earlier this week said Azure revenue jumped 29%, and Google Cloud expanded by 22%.

Amazon - Stock Analyst Research
Target Price* 190.00
Recommendation BUY

Amazon.com Inc. - Margins expansion still the main story

3Q23 revenue was in line with our expectation, while earnings exceeded.

9M23 revenue/PATMI was at 73%/98% of our FY23e forecasts.

Earnings outperformance was due to higher-than-expected gross margins and lower-than-expected operating expenses.

Operating income more than tripled YoY due to the benefits of network regionalisation in the US, easing inflation, strong advertising growth and lower headcount.

AWS growth has stabilised as the rate of customer cost-optimisation continues to attenuate.

We maintain a BUY rating with an increased DCF target price of US$190.00 (prev. US$175.00), with a WACC of 6.4% and terminal growth rate of 5%.

We increase our FY23e revenue/PATMI forecasts by 2%/31% to account for the higher-than-expected operating leverage.

Amazon.com is adding package tracking and return services for subscription members who use Buy With Prime, ahead of the holiday shopping season when it will face competition from new marketplaces including Shein and Tik Tok Shop.

Buy With Prime, which launched in 2022, gives retailers who are not Amazon merchants fulfillment and delivery through its logistics network.

Its newest features aim to pull in fee revenue from shops outside of Amazon.com during the peak holiday season.

US shoppers are expected to spend between US$273.7 billion and US$278.8 billion online this holiday season, an increase between 7 per cent and 9 per cent, according to the National Retail Federation.

Peter Larsen, Amazon vice-president of Buy with Prime, said the company is seeing some non-Amazon merchants who use Buy With Prime sign up to be third-party sellers after seeing more sales.

Along with speedy deliveries, Prime shoppers can now return items purchased through Buy With Prime outside of Amazon.com without shipping labels and boxes.

The perk was previously only available to orders made through the e-commerce platform.

Amazon also announced that Prime customers who buy from Buy With Prime merchants can now see their order history on their apps and have 24-hour access to customer service representatives.

Amazon is sharply cutting fees for merchants selling clothing priced below US$20, a sign it’s hunkering down for a price war with Chinese fast-fashion upstart Shein.

On Tuesday (Dec 5), Amazon announced it would reduce seller fees on clothing products priced below US$15 to 5 per cent beginning in January.

The rates on clothing priced from US$15 to US$20 will drop to 10 per cent. The commissions on both categories had previously been 17 per cent.

It’s rare for Amazon to reduce the so-called referral fees it charges merchants on its online store, and no other changes of that nature were announced.

That signals Amazon is specifically looking to entice merchants offering low-cost clothes – an area where Shein has excelled with its US$9 hoodies and other bargain-basement apparel.

Amazon.com’s push into video advertising will boost annual revenue by as much as US$5 billion, mostly generated by new television-style commercials on Prime Video.

Ads on Amazon’s streaming service will start appearing in North America on Jan 29 and internationally on Feb 5.

To receive ad-free content, North American subscribers will have to pay an additional US$3 per month.

Amazon’s advertising business – mostly search and display ads on its web store – generated US$12.1 billion in the quarter ended Sep 30, about 8.5 per cent of total revenue.

The Seattle-based company sees Prime Video as an ideal spot to boost ad sales and profit from the billions it has spent on content, including movies and National Football League games.

Advertising is Amazon’s smallest but fastest-growing revenue source.

Amazon on Thursday reported fourth-quarter results that sailed past analysts’ estimates, and gave strong guidance for the current quarter.

Revenue jumped 14% to $170 billion in the fourth quarter vs. $166.2 billion expected by LSEG. The period reflects results from the holiday shopping season, and Amazon’s October Prime Day event, both of which the company said exceeded its expectations.

Sales at AWS climbed 13% in the fourth quarter to $24.2 billion, in line with Wall Street’s forecast. That marks a slight uptick from the previous quarter, when sales expanded 12%, but it’s a deceleration from the year-ago period, when sales grew 20%.

Amazon’s profitable advertising unit saw sales grow 27% year over year to $14.7 billion. Amazon said first-quarter sales will be between $138 billion and $143.5 billion, representing growth of 8% to 13%. Analysts were expecting revenue of $142.1 billion, according to Refinitiv.
