Amazon Posts Strongest Cloud Sales Growth in a Year on AI Demand

by Matt Day and Spencer Soper

First-quarter operating profit of $15.3 billion.

Revenue increased 13% to $143.3 billion in the period ended March 31, Amazon said Tuesday in a statement.

Sales in the Amazon Web Services cloud unit were $25 billion, up 17% from a year earlier.

Amazon’s capital expenditures would “meaningfully increase” in 2024, primarily to support AWS growth, including for generative AI. The company has said it will spend more than $150 billion to build out and operate data centers in the coming years.

1Q Earnings

Amazon reported first quarter earnings that topped Wall Street estimates on the top and bottom lines, sending shares of the retail giant up as much as 5% in after-hours trading.

Powered by a strong showing from its cloud computing segment, Amazon continued a wave of Big Tech results that have mostly wowed Wall Street even as investors turn their focus to the conclusion of the Fed's May policy meeting on Wednesday.

Net sales rose 13% from the same period last year to $143.3 billion, topping analyst expectations of $142.6 billion.

The beat was driven by a 16% jump in Amazon Web Services (AWS) revenue, which Amazon said is on course to generate $100 billion annually.

Amazon - Stock Analyst Research
Target Price* 220.00
Recommendation BUY

Amazon.com Inc.- More AWS growth ahead

1Q24 revenue/PATMI meet our expectations at 22%/26% of our FY24e forecasts.

1Q24 revenue grew 12.5% YoY to US$143.3bn led by continued strength in AWS and advertising.

Operating income benefited from lower depreciation due to a change in useful life of servers (~US$900mn in 1Q24)

AWS revenue growth accelerated (17.2% YoY), driven by:
1) the end of the cost-optimizing trend as companies pivot towards newer initiatives to modernize their infrastructure;
2) accelerated demand for Gen AI;
3) strong emphasis on security and operational performance that appeals to customers. >85% global IT spend still remaining on-premises, highlighting significant growth headroom ahead.

We maintain the BUY recommendation but raised our DCF target price to US$220.00 (prev. US$215.00), with an unchanged WACC of 6.4% and terminal growth rate of 5%.

Our FY24e revenue estimates remain unchanged, while we increased our PATMI by 4% to account for lower expenses, a result of improved cost efficiencies.
