Apple Inc. (AAPL) Stock Has Problems, But It’s Still a Buy

Value investors should love AAPL stock, which dipped in the past few months

SensoMotoric developed eye-tracking technology for Oculus Rift, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) owns. In effect, Apple’s acquisition of this company puts it in competition with the social network giant’s VR subsidiary.

Thriving Apple can still keep growing

Apple's June quarter revenue jumped 7.2 percent to US$52.9 billion (HK$412.6 billion) from a year earlier, best growth in seven quarters.

The result was encouraging thanks to increased sales in the iPad and Mac. Shipment of iPhones rose 1.6 percent to 41.03 million.

There is still a lot of talk about the coming iPhone8 though we do not have a launch date yet. The company is expecting US$49 billion to US$52 billion revenue in the next quarter.

The share price of Apple Inc went up 6.1 percent in Tuesday's after hours trading.

Apple is trading with a 1.69 percent dividend yield. Most of the internet shares (Baidu, Facebook, Alphabet, Alibaba) did not pay any dividend at all. Apple's stock is trading at 17.6 times historical earnings, around 30 percent to 60 percent cheaper than those internet giants.

Apple is sitting with US$246 billion, or 94 percent of the total, outside the United States. If the one-time cut in repatriation taxes proposed by President Donald Trump is approved, Apple can return some to shareholders as dividend. If not, Apple can still invest in a lot of areas which can stimulate growth.

The only negative news was the drop of iPhone sales in the Greater China region. But the American market was up 13 percent, and the rest of Asia gained 15 percent. Europe was up 11 percent. The overall gain is still promising.

iPhone users are loyal and will continue to use it and also hold its stock.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) Stock Is Rotting on Cloud Nine

AAPL stock still is riding high after fiscal Q3 earnings, but not all is well in Cupertino

By Neil George

In China, Apple saw sales down some 10% from the same quarter in 2016 and down 25% from the second quarter of this year.

iOS devices were only 31% of the market for new smartphones compared to 67% running on Alphabet Inc’s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Android OS.

Dow Jones Stocks to Buy: Apple (AAPL)

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is an easy buy for a number of reasons. You could buy Apple for the $261 billion in cash and investments that sit on the balance sheet, waiting to be deployed.

You could buy Apple for the breathtaking potential of the upcoming iPhone 8. You could even buy it in hopes that future product lines like Apple Home will take off.

Right now, though, I’m in love with the Services business.

Apple’s Services division includes revenues from Digital Content and Services, AppleCare, Apple Pay and licensing agreements. And business is booming.

While the iPhone still makes up the lion’s share of the company’s revenues and earnings, Services is quickly turning into a bread-‘n’-butter division.

Last quarter, Services brought in roughly $7.3 billion of Apple’s $45.4 billion top line, second only to the iPhone, which made up $24.8 billion.

The division’s sales grew 22% year-over-year, and went from 14% of overall revenues to 16%. And whereas the iPhone includes various manufacturing costs, the digital nature of Services means boffo margins that will continue to drive Apple’s ample cash flows.

That’s great news if you’re an income investor. So is Apple’s 66% jolt to its payout since initiating regular dividends in 2012.

Cash-Rich Stocks to Buy: Apple (AAPL)

Cash and short-term investments: $262 billion

To be honest, I’m personally still a bit skeptical of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), particularly with it trading near an all-time high.

The company remains heavily reliant on the iPhone, despite efforts to grow the rest of the business. And I worry that reliance will cause profits to decline at some point in the not-too-distant future.

But for investors who value strong balance sheets, it’s tough to find a better stock in the market. Apple has a stunning $262 billion in cash and investments, and net cash and investments of about $165 billion.

And it seems increasingly likely at some point that Apple will use that cash for a large acquisition, most likely in its Services business.

One thing that’s certainly in the offing is a $1 billion push into original content, according to reports out today, that will pit it against the likes of Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) and Hulu.

Apple has been a speculated buyer of companies ranging from Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) to the aforementioned Netflix, but hasn’t yet pulled the trigger on a big deal. (Its largest acquisition so far was the $3 billion purchase of Beats Music in 2014.)

But a big M&A play likely is coming soon, given CEO Tim Cook’s announced target of doubling services revenue to roughly $50 billion in four years.

Apple isn’t quite capable of creating that growth on its own. It likely will have to spend some of the cash — and very well could wind up spending big.

If You Own Alphabet Inc (GOOGL) Stock, This Should Nag You

Apple and Alphabet seem to be in a healthy partnership, but stranger things have happened

By James Brumley

Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi reckons that Alphabet is going to pay Apple about $3 billion this year for pre-setting Google as the search engine on iOS devices.

Based on court documents that confirmed Alphabet forked over $1 billion for that privilege in 2014, and then extrapolating the growth of the iPhone in the meantime, Sacconaghi concludes this year’s tally is on the order of $3 billion.

The fee is booked as licensing revenue, which is part of Apple’s fast-growing “Services” arm that also includes app and subscription-based revenue.

The fee will also grow every year, assuming Apple continues to sell more devices — it’s billed on a per-user basis.

It’s a not-so-touted secret that should spook owners of GOOGL stock: Alphabet needs Apple a lot more than Apple needs Alphabet.

Apple could replace Alphabet’s $3 billion much easier than Alphabet could replace the 1 billion-plus devices running iOS, most of which have (or still have) Google is the default search engine.

Stocks to Sell in September: Apple (AAPL)

It’s undoubtedly going to be the most controversial name on this look at stocks to sell sooner than later, particularly with the launch of a new iPhone just days away. I know it will be at odds with some of my InvestorPlace peers.

But Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has more working for it than against it right now, and September usually isn’t a good month for the stock anyway.

In the bigger picture, the 80% run-up over the course of the past 12 months has left AAPL shares at the upper end of a long-term trading range that doesn’t leave room for more upside.

Moreover, while the launch of what could be the most impressive smartphone ever seems like a big deal, history shows that such news hasn’t always resulted in bullishness … particularly when the stock’s overbought the way it is now.

With or without the bigger-picture headwind though, September just isn’t a great month for Apple.

On average it loses 6% of its value, and even in a bullish year it just breaks even, on average. Just don’t stay out too long. More often than not, the last three months are quite bullish ones of AAPL.
