Apple iPhone Captures Half of Global Smartphone Revenue in 2017 Q4

By Paul Ausick

According to data presented Thursday by research firm Strategy Analytics, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and the company’s iPhone took a record 51% of global smartphone sales revenue in the fourth quarter of last year. That’s about $61.4 billion of the $120.2 billion total.

Third-place Huawei posted revenues of $8.4 billion in the quarter, enough for a 7% market share.

All other smartphone makers posted $31.5 billion in fourth-quarter revenues, for 26.2% market share.

Top Undervalued Stocks to Buy No. 2: Apple Inc.

Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) was one of the top-performing stocks of 2017, and 2018 could be another excellent year.

In January, Apple announced its plans to invest $350 billion in the U.S. economy over the next five years, open a new campus, and hire a minimum of 20,000 new employees.

AAPL stock took a hit after it reported selling lower-than-expected volumes of its new iPhone X smartphone. Combined with the broad stock market correction, AAPL shares fell 13.4%, from $179 to $155, before rebounding back to $173. So far in 2018, AAPL shares are down just under 1%, at $173.60.

But the stock has the potential to hit Guggenheim Securities’ price target of $215 in 2018, which would produce gains of 23.85% from current levels.

Even with a fewer number of iPhones sold, Apple’s smartphone revenue shot up 13% year over year. That’s thanks in part to iPhone X’s price tag starting at $999.

Research firm Canalys reported that Apple sold 29 million iPhone X’s in the first quarter of 2018, and those phones were only on sale for the January month of the quarter.

Considering these figures, AAPL is not only flying under the radar right now, but it is on sale for investors.

Best Dividend Growth Stocks to Buy: Apple Inc. (AAPL)

Dividend Yield: 1.4%
3-Year Annual Dividend Growth Rate: 10%

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is the world’s most valuable company and one of the largest positions in Warren Buffett’s dividend stock portfolio.

Apple is the world’s second-largest smartphone company, accounting for more than 11% of the global market share, according to Gadgets Now.

The iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV are Apple’s key products, with the iPhone representing over 60% of 2017 sales. These products are globally recognized for their high quality, premium brand and ease-of-use, allowing Apple to enjoy substantial pricing power.

In addition, the company also owns a portfolio of consumer and professional software such iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS operating systems which act as key differentiators.

Apple’s products and solutions are known for their innovative design, user-friendly experience and seamless integration. All these innovative products have established Apple’s supremacy in the mobile space, and the company invests around 5% of its revenues on R&D activities to stay ahead of competitors.

Moreover, only Apple devices run iOS, which means that if customers want to remain within the Apple ecosystem, they must continue buying iOS devices. This results in sticky customer relationships.

Its sales of games, music and other digital content through the iTunes store is another high-margin cash flow stream that keeps growing every year.

A leading brand name, global geographical presence, impressive product portfolio and super-sticky customer relationships have helped form a huge moat around Apple’s business.

Apple started paying dividends again in 2012 and it has seen its payout grow by approximately 10% annually over the last three years. It last raised its payout by 11% and maintains a low payout ratio below 30%.

Given Apple’s leading market share, loyal customers, innovative products and hoard of cash on the balance sheet, the company should continue raising its dividend at a strong pace in the future as well.

Demand continues to be tepid for the $1,000 iPhone X and this year’s models look to be incremental, at best.

The company will next report reports on May 1, after the bell.

Analysts are looking for earnings of $2.71-per-share on revenues of $61.3 billion.

When the company last reported on Feb. 1, earnings of $3.89 beat estimates by 4 cents on a 12.7% rise in revenues.

Stocks Hedge Funds Are Buying: Apple (AAPL)

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is the largest U.S. company by market value, so perhaps it is not surprising that the iPhone maker is usually a hedge fund favorite.

While not a hedge fund, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRK-A) is a major Apple shareholder.

In fact, Apple is Berkshire’s top holding, even exceeding the likes of The Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) and Wells Fargo & Co (NYSE:WFC).

The company, shares of which are up nearly 21% over the past year, recently launched a red iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus. While Apple is a story stock, there are some near-term issues to consider.

Recently Goldman Sachs said of iPhone sales it “ expects sales of 53 million units in the calendar first quarter. For the three months to June, Goldman said it expects sales of 40.3 million units, a reduction of 3.2 million from its previous forecast,” according to CNBC.

Best Stocks to Buy for the Next Decade: Apple (AAPL)

You can say what you want about the iPhone maker’s best days being behind it, but I have a feeling Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will continue to create products people want to buy for years to come.

What they are, I couldn’t tell you.

What I do know is that Apple will continue to generate a huge amount of free cash flow to reward shareholders for their patience and loyalty.

AAPL currently converts 71.7% of its EBITDA into free cash flow, which is pretty darn close to the 77.7% conversion rate of Amazon — a company known for doing a good job converting cash.

The most recent rumor on Wall Street has Apple and Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) hooking up to form a media and tech conglomerate.

While speculative in nature, the combination would provide Apple with a few more avenues to generate ideas for new products.

At this point, while I like Disney, I’d say it needs Apple more than Apple needs it.

Apple Jitters Mount on Concerns of Waning Smartphone Demand

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., a major Apple supplier, on Thursday gave a forecast for second-quarter sales that fell short of analysts’ estimates, in part reflecting a slowdown in the global smartphone market.

Earlier this week, the International Monetary Fund said the industry may have peaked. In its latest outlook for the world economy, the IMF said smartphone shipments declined for the first time.

While TSMC is getting more growth from new customers, such as those seeking powerful chips to mine digital currencies, it’s confronting a slowdown in demand from smartphone vendors as developed markets get saturated and replacement cycles lengthen.

AAPL shares are down 4% in trading on Friday after analysts lowered their earnings estimates.

Shares fell nearly 3% on Thursday following a weak report and forecast from Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE:TSM) citing softness in the high-end of the smartphone market.

Everyone knows this is the iPhone X they are talking about as the so-called “supercycle” has failed to materialize. $999 is just too much to pay for many people.

The company will next report results on May 1 after the close.

Analysts are looking for earnings of $2.69 per share on revenues of $61.2 billion.

When it last reported on Feb. 1, earnings of $3.89 beat estimates by four cents on a 12.7% rise in revenues.
