AN UPDATE ON ONE OF STEVE'S BEST RECOMMENDATIONS

In February, we told you about Steve's big call on Blackstone Group (BX)... Today's chart proves the idea is still working.

Back in January 2013, Steve began writing about the opportunity in Blackstone. In short, Blackstone is Steve's favorite "backdoor" way to invest in the U.S. real estate rebound.

Blackstone is a giant money manager. As Steve wrote a few years ago, Blackstone started buying up residential real estate properties at dirt-cheap prices, fixing them up, and then selling them for a profit.

According to Steve, this simple "Buy It. Fix it. Sell it." strategy was setting Blackstone investors up for a 100% gain within two years.

As you can see below, Steve's numbers turned out to be conservative. Investors who bought on Steve's recommendation doubled their money in just one year.

Since Steve's first note in DailyWealth, shares are up 134% (not including dividends)... and just soared to a new all-time high. Better yet, the company's annual dividend yield has skyrocketed – quadrupling in just the past 12 months. That means investors who took Steve up on Blackstone in 2013 are also earning a safe dividend yield of 15.7% on their original cost.

Blackstone (BX)
YTD performance: +25%
Current price: $42
Price target: $50

Blackstone has raised an eye-popping $50 billion this year alone -- and it's not done.

Calling it a "fundraising machine," Morgan Stanley thinks the massive private-equity firm could raise another $80 billion over the next 18 months.

That means Steve Schwarzmann's Blackstone has lots of cash to play with -- and to earn hefty fees on.

All of that is good news for people who own Blackstone's shares.

Blue Chips in Trouble: Blackstone (BX)

Blackstone (BX) also gave off a fairly significant bearish signal recently; in this case, it was a head-and-shoulders top.

The stock is currently hovering around $39, and the Profit Scanner is looking for a further drop to the $36-$36.80 level in the intermediate term.

The head-and-shoulders top is one of the most popular chart patterns, as it’s considered to be one of the most reliable. It’s also fairly easy to spot, taking the form of three rallies, the highest of which is in the middle (the “head”) flanked by two lower highs (the “shoulders”).

Volume tends to be high during the first two rallies, then tapers off through the right shoulder, and spikes again as the stock price breaks the lower “neckline.”

The implication here is that the stock has finished a distribution period during a major uptrend, and is now embarking on a new downtrend.

For opportunistic traders seeking downside profits, Blackstone has a fairly robust option chain … and with several other bearish signals coming into play in June and this month, buy-and-hold investors may want to stay away until the dust settles.

Blackstone posts third-quarter loss as asset values drop By Greg Roumeliotis

Blackstone Group LP (BX.N), the world's largest alternative asset manager, reported its first quarterly economic net loss in four years on Thursday, as the stock market plunge weighed on the value of its portfolio, even as it generated more cash.

Blackstone's private equity, real estate, corporate credit and hedge fund assets all declined in value. Most of the New York-based firm's capital however is locked in long-term funds, which do not have to sell assets if valuations are low, so the losses were mostly on paper rather than realized.

In the third quarter, the firm continued to generate cash by selling assets selectively at high valuations, and said it expected bargains to come to the market.

Blackstone said economic net income (ENI), which takes into account the mark-to-market valuation of its portfolio, was a loss of $416 million in the quarter, versus a $758.4 million profit a year ago.

The negative ENI per share was 35 cents, versus the average negative 29 cents expected by analysts in a Thomson Reuters poll.

Blackstone's private equity funds depreciated 2.3 percent in the quarter, while the value of its opportunistic real estate funds was down 0.1 percent.

Distributable earnings, which show actual cash available to pay dividends, rose 1 percent year on year to $692 million on strong asset divestments.

The top CEO in private equity has a rule for investing ― and it has generated billions in returns By Jonathan Marino

The Blackstone Group has a stellar track record.

The firm now manages more than $300 billion in total assets, while CEO and cofounder Stephen Schwarzman has a net worth of more than $11 billion.

It's not financial engineering or dealmaking wunderkinds that have Blackstone's returns outpacing most of the firm's competitors, according to Schwarzman.

Rather, it's a straightforward approach to deals.

"I’ve learned that all investments have risk," Schwarzman told Business Insider. "One of the rules I've learned is that struggling to try and think your way into making an investment is usually the best way to not have a great outcome."

He continued: "The best investments are the easiest ones to approve. Ironically, when a bunch of very smart people are sitting around a table for hours trying to figure out whether they should do something, that tends to not necessarily lead to the best results.

"The investments where people walk in and the sense is, 'Well, this looks absolutely terrific, let's do it,' those investments are almost always quite successful."

That approach seems to have paid off.
