BHP Billiton: Unveils U.S. Shale Sale, Cuts Copper Target, Narrows Iron Ore Target

By Robert Guy

From Goldman Sachs:

BHP Billiton (BHP.AX) reported their 3Q17 production result, which as expected was poor due to weather and strikes. However whilst poor on a qoq basis the ‘expected’ nature of the lower numbers was well flagged by the company and we believe well disseminated by the market.

On guidance, iron ore volume is stable; coking coal and copper lowered due to weather and strikes.

Overall, whilst volumes were impacted, much of it was out of BHP’s control (i.e. weather). Whilst guidance has been lowered for FY17, FY18 appears to be unchanged and suggests to us that underlying quality of the BHP business portfolio remains intact.

RBC Capital Markets‘ Paul Hissey also viewed the results as a little weaker than expected. Here’s his take:

Overall, this was a softer quarter versus our estimates. Much of this was to be expected, with the industrial action at Escondida well documented and weather impacts on both the West (iron ore) and East (metallurgical coal) coasts of Australia previously flagged by RIO and FMG.

Whilst reduced FY17 guidance at two of its ‘pillars’ (copper and metallurgical coal) should impact earnings, this may already be factored into the share price following RIO’s announcement last week.

The broker rates the stock a sector-perform with a price target of AUD29 a share.

BHP Billiton (NYSE:BBL)

If you’ve been on the fence over BHP Billiton, it’s probably time to get off. In late July, BHP announced the sale of its onshore U.S. assets for a whopping $10.8 billion, and those funds will likely make their way back to shareholders in the form of buybacks or dividends.

That makes it a good play for income investors. It’s seen a 42-percent jump in final dividends, hitting a record 63 U.S. cents a share. That means the total payout for the year is $2.5 billion.

But this isn’t just for income investors … there’s also a big global growth outlook here, and the general sentiment is that BHP is going to now grow earnings steadily.

The pain for the company has subsided, and the timing is now ripe as we see a confluence of rising commodity prices and asset sales.

In terms of recovery stories in the mining sector, this is the biggest one.

Commodity demand echoes in BHP results

By CLYDE RUSSELL

Major supplier of iron ore, coal and copper.

Steady first-half result of US$6.6bil profits, the same as the year-earlier period.

US$5.7bil in impairments and charges booked, relating to writing down the value of nickel business in Western Australia state and charges against the Samarco iron ore operations in Brazil to cover for the dam collapse in 2015.

China is transitioning from being the main driver of growth in demand for commodities, to being a steady source of demand.

China had record iron ore consumption in 2023 and steel output was above one billion tonnes for a fifth straight year, numbers that allowed BHP to record a 6% rise in revenue growth.

Iron ore is BHP’s biggest product, accounting for 68% of the group’s underlying profits.

Long-held view that China’s steel production would sit at a plateau in the one to 1.1 billion tonnes per annum range in the first half of the 2020s.

India and South-East Asia are also expected to increase steel output in coming years, which may offset any decline in China.

Copper demand growth in China to continue, albeit at a somewhat slower pace than the 6% year-on-year rate seen in calendar year 2023.

Overall, BHP’s outlook for its major commodities remains tied to the fortunes of China, with a side-helping of India.
