Bull Of The Day: Boeing (BA)

The 737 MAX was on course to become Boeing's fast-selling airplane, with over 4,600 on backlog order as of last month.

At about $120 million a piece, that would total over $550 billion in sales in less than a decade, according to the expected delivery schedule.

Boeing shares cheaper, but are they a buy?

by Lewis Krauskopf

Trading at about 18.2 times earnings estimates for the next 12 months.

Consensus analyst estimate for Boeing’s earnings per share this year, which calls for 26 percent growth, has not changed this week amid the evolving fallout for the company.

GS estimates the MAX jet will account for 45 percent of total Boeing EBIT over the next five years.

JP Morgan analyst Seth Seifman said the situation could hurt Boeing’s cash flow in three ways:
1. compensation of airlines for grounded planes
2. delays of deliveries of the jet and
3. any modifications for the aircraft

Boeing Jets May Be Grounded Through April Pending Software Fix

By Ryan Beene and Erik Wasson

House transportation leaders briefed by FAA officials Thursday
737 Max family may stay parked through April, Larsen says

Software updates to Boeing Co.’s 737 Max 8 aircraft will keep it out of the sky until at least May, the FAA’s acting chief said today.

That process could last for six weeks or more depending on additional training needed for pilots.

Boeing is preparing fixes to anti-stall software that baffled pilots of the downed Lion Air jet by pitching the plane’s nose down dozens of times before it crashed in the Java Sea off the coast of Indonesia in October. The system was activated by a reading from a single faulty sensor, without any pilot input.

Boeing paying price for disastrous mistakes

737 Max jets set to start piling up outside of factory as lawsuits mount following crash that has prompted widespread outrage

The model accounts for an increasing share of Boeing sales – around one third – with nearly 600 jets slated to be delivered this year. Almost 5,000 are on back order.

Boeing will potentially incur costs in the neighborhood of hundreds of millions of dollars to compensate airlines that have seen disrupted service.

According to Barclays, the costs associated with the incident could tally upwards of $1 billion. But even after shares of the firm plunged this week, the company still boasts a market cap in excess of $200 billion.

Boeing News: BA Stock Rebounds on News of 737 Max Fix

by Karl Utermohlen

The software upgrade is slated to take place in about a week and a half, the publication reported, yet the timeline for aircraft release to airlines remains the same.

Wall Street analysts were expecting the Boeing 737 Max fit to last three to six months, not weeks.

There are currently more than 350 of these jets in global fleets, 74 of which are flown by major U.S. airlines.

Boeing's safety analysis of 737 MAX flight control had crucial flaws: Seattle Times

(Reuters) - Boeing Co's safety analysis of a new flight control system on 737 MAX jets had several crucial flaws, the Seattle Times reported on Sunday.

Boeing's safety analysis of the flight control system called MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System) understated the power of this system, the Seattle Times said, citing current and former engineers at the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA also did not delve into any detailed inquiries and followed a standard certification process on the MAX, the Seattle Times reported citing an FAA spokesman.

The FAA declined to comment on the Seattle Times report but referred to previous statements about the certification process. It has said the 737-MAX certification process followed the FAA's standard certification process.

The report also said both Boeing and the FAA were informed of the specifics of this story and were asked for responses 11 days ago, before the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX last Sunday that killed all 157 people on board. The same model flown by Lion Air crashed off the coast of Indonesia in October, killing all 189 on board.

Last Monday Boeing said it would deploy a software upgrade to the 737 MAX 8, a few hours after the FAA said it would mandate "design changes" in the aircraft by April.

A Boeing spokesman said 737 MAX was certified in accordance with the identical FAA requirements and processes that have governed certification of all previous new airplanes and derivatives. The spokesman said the FAA concluded that MCAS on 737 MAX met all certification and regulatory requirements.

Boeing Is An Ideal Short Target, But Not Yet

Summary

Boeing has had a long history of extreme rallies and crashes.

The latest rally since early 2017 is the 6th since 1962.

The latest tragedy involving the 737 Max 8 won't have a long term effect on the share price.

A recession and higher oil prices will, as they have in the past, be the downfall for Boeing.

Boeing is essentially a 737 company, which is where most of its earnings and sales comes from.
