How to Profit from China’s No. 1 Trade War Target

by Keith Fitz-Gerald

1. Set a trailing stop at a past resistance point – $295.00 per share, for example – or by using a simple percentage retracement from the company’s high of $371.60 a share on Feb. 28, 2018.

2. Second, geopolitical tensions are higher than they’ve been in 70 years, which means that Boeing’s military contracts are rock-solid and likely undervalued. Military defense spending makes up 22.54% of company revenues.

3. Placing lowball orders at ridiculously low prices is a great way to do that. A quick look at the chart tells me that $255.00 is in the neighborhood because it’s consistent with past support.

MORE BIG GAINS FOR THIS 'OFFENSE' CONTRACTOR

Today, we're checking in on a leader in defense...

We've noted frequently that the U.S. spends a fortune on foreign conflicts. As these wars drag on, the government relies on a number of companies to supply its weapons, military vehicles, and other necessities. We call them "offense" contractors. Today, we're revisiting a leader in military aircraft...

Boeing (BA) is one of the world's largest defense contractors. While the company does make commercial planes, it also produces fighter jets, transport aircraft, and missiles.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Army awarded Boeing a $160 million contract for support work on its Chinook helicopters. These government contracts add up to big revenues...

In the second quarter, Boeing's defense segment booked sales of nearly $5.6 billion, a 9% increase over the same period last year.

As you can see in the chart below, shares have broken out. The stock is up more than 50% over the past year, and it just hit a fresh all-time high.

As long as the government keeps up its military spending, "offense" contractors like Boeing won't run short on business...

Defense stocks to buy: Boeing (BA)

Boeing (NYSE:BA) is the king-of-the hill. Historically this stock is immune to dips as evident by its long-term performances. This year is an odd one though. Boeing stock is stuck in the line of fire this during trade war. So traders are under the impression that China’s retaliation to the U.S. tariffs will include penalties to BA.

In reality, China needs BA’s planes more than the company needs those sales. Boeing’s pipeline is full for decades to come. Sure, it is never ideal to antagonize the massive Chinese market, but the stock should not be sold so aggressively on every tweet.

So for this purpose, I favor owning BA stock through this period of uncertainty until the leaders come to their senses.

Owning shares of Boeing at price-to-earnings ratio of 25 is not going to be a mistake in the long run. Proof of my point is that BA is still up 40% in one year despite a highly antagonistic year.

Best Stocks to Buy: Boeing (BA)

One of the world’s largest aerospace companies, shares in Boeing (NYSE:BA) slipped this year on trade war fears. But Head of Research at Fundstrat Tom Lee believes the market overreacted.

He has calculated that Boeing actually has a trade war exposure of just 35.2%. To calculate this figure, Lee looked at the company’s overseas sourcing as a percentage of cost of goods sold and exports as a percentage of sales. A percentage under 40% means the company has a low trade war exposure, according to Lee.

And in this case, despite all the trade war noise, I would recommend carefully considering Boeing right now.

After all, BA stock has received 11“buy” ratings in the past four months, with three analysts on the sidelines. With a $436 average price target, upside potential stands at 38%. But some analysts are much more bullish than consensus.

For example, five-star Cowen & Co analyst Cai Rumohr singles out BA as one of the best stocks to buy. He has a bullish $445 price target.

Boeing could face 'absolutely devastating' economic impact after crash

by Alexis Keenan

Early questions surrounding two crashes center on an autopilot system new to Boeing’s 737 line in the MAX 8.

The feature automatically tilts the nose of the aircraft down as a method to prevent aerodynamic stall.

“In every crash sequence there's kind of a fingerprint. In both the Lion Air and the Ethiopian Air crash, the planes took off and within six to 12 minutes both planes with similar altitude excursion profiles gained and lost altitude, which is strong evidence of pilots struggling with this MCAS system,” he said referring to the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, the planes’ autopilot system.

Another possible sign that the autopilot feature could have caused the pilots to fully lose control of the aircraft, according to Rosenberg, is the impact sight.

Tom Routh, a partner with the Nolan Law group, a firm that specializes in aviation litigation, said Boeing, in his experience, typically carries enough insurance coverage for catastrophic crashes caused by manufacturing defects.

According to the Capa Fleet Database Boeing has delivered 378 MAX 8 aircraft, globally. Another 5,526 are on order. In 2018, list price for the MAX 8 was $117.1 million.

Whether pilots knew about the new autopilot feature in the Max 8 is disputed. According to Boeing, Rosenberg said, the feature was included in the aircraft’s pilot manual and in a bulletin following the Lion Air crash of a Boeing 737 in October.

“It's our position in the Lion Air case that Boeing should have should been required to and should have sought a new type certificate, rather than the amended type,” Routh said.
