3 Reasons to Buy Apple Stock Like There's No Tomorrow

by James Brumley

1. The company's dealing with the headwind in China
India alone could account for 15% of Apple's revenue growth over the course of the coming five years.

2. Apple is finally getting serious about AI

3. Cash is still flowing like crazy
The $100.9 billion worth of net income the company's produced over the course of the past four reported quarters is nearly a record, second only to the 12-month stretch ending in early 2022

Sales of apps and streaming content improved 11% year over year last quarter, but more than that, this revenue is very high margin. Roughly three-fourths of the company's services sales are converted into gross profit versus only 40% of product-driven revenue.

Apple is also sitting on $73 billion worth of cash and cash-like instruments plus another $99 billion worth of marketable securities.

1Q Earnings

Apple on Thursday said its quarterly profit ebbed but topped market forecasts as it announced an unprecedented US$110 billion share buyback.

The iPhone maker reported a profit of US$23.6 billion on US$90.8 billion in revenue in the first three months of this year.

Shares were up nearly 6 per cent to US$183 in after-market trades, buoyed by the epic buyback program.

As expected, iPhone sales dropped with pressure growing from China and increased competition from Huawei.

Apple shares jumped the most in almost a year-and-a-half after the company posted stronger-than-expected sales last quarter and predicted a return to growth in the current period, sparking optimism that a slowdown is easing.

Though revenue fell 4.3 per cent to US$90.8 billion in the March quarter, that was better than the US$90.3 billion predicted by analysts.

Profit also topped Wall Street projections in the period, and Apple announced the biggest stock buyback in US history.

The shares rallied as much as 8.1 per cent to US$187 on Friday (May 3) morning in New York. It was the biggest intraday gain since November 2022.

Apple had been down 10 per cent this year before results were released on Thursday.

The results came as a relief to investors, who have been waiting for the iPhone maker to pull out of a long slump.

Apple has posted sales declines in five of the past six quarters, hurt by a sluggish smartphone market and headwinds in China.

The company had warned analysts in February that revenue in the latest period would be down about 5 per cent from a year earlier.

In the current period, Apple expects sales to climb by a percentage in the low single digits.

The company predicted that both its iPad and services business would grow by a rate in the double digits, but declined to give a forecast for the iPhone – its flagship product.

Apple on Tuesday (May 7) introduced a new chip called the M4 that it said would outclass personal computers designed for artificial intelligence – but put the new chip in an iPad Pro model rather than a laptop.

The move is unusual for Apple, which typically puts its latest chips into its Mac lineup, where M3 chips started to show up last fall.

But analysts told Reuters that Apple is likely eager to get its latest chips, which are more power-efficient and have larger portions of the chip dedicated to handling AI tasks, into the hands of app makers ahead of its annual software developer conference next month.

The iPhone maker’s latest product launch event comes as the Silicon Valley heavyweight trails Big Tech rivals while they race to build AI into its products across their businesses and dominate the emerging technology.

Apple said the iPad Pro – its highest-priced model – will have upgraded displays and start at US$1,000 for an 11-inch (27.9-cm) model and US$1,300 for a 13-inch (33-cm) model.

It will come with an M4 chip with a larger “neural engine,” part of the chip specifically designed for the kind of computing required by AI features such as generating text or images.

Apple chips have featured a neural engine since 2017, but rivals such as Intel and have begun to tout their competitive technologies for personal computers.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) – 1Q Earnings

Prior to Apple’s earnings, shares had fallen 10% this year, primarily due to the company’s iPhone sales tanking in Asian markets. So, investors were closely watching Apple’s results for its fiscal second quarter to look for signs of the company regaining momentum.

Apple’s second-quarter results exceeded analysts’ expectations. The company reported earnings of $1.53 per share on $90.75 billion in revenue. Analysts expected $1.50 per share in earnings on $90.1 billion in revenue.

A bright spot for Apple was their services revenue. It hit $23.87 billion, a slight beat and also an all-time record.

What’s more, Apple announced a monster buyback plan. Specifically, it plans to spend $110 billion on share repurchases, marking it the largest in US history.

And to further reward investors, the company is raising its quarterly dividend for a 12th consecutive year.

The board of directors declared a cash dividend of $0.25 per share, an increase of 4%. All shareholders of record on May 13 will receive the dividend on May 16.

The positive earnings report and new share buyback program boosted AAPL 7% higher on Friday, May 3.

Now, I should add that investors have been waiting on pins and needles to hear the company’s plans for AI. The tech giant has remained tight-lipped on the subject, causing investors to worry that Apple may be falling behind its tech rivals, such as Amazon and Google-parent Alphabet.

CEO Tim Cook partially addressed those concerns in the company’s conference call. Here’s what he said:

We believe in the transformative power and promise of AI, and we believe we have advantages that will differentiate us in this new era including Apple's unique combination of seamless hardware, software, and services integration; groundbreaking Apple silicon with our industry leading neural engine; and our unwavering focus on privacy.

On Tuesday, Apple gave investors a taste of this by unveiling its latest iPad Pros with the company’s all-new M4 processor. It has a new 16-core neural engine that is said to be more powerful than any neural processing unit out there. Apple quickly noted they have been adding the M4’s neural engines to its processors for years.

The reality, however, is that what investors really want to know are the company’s plans for AI as it relates to the iPhone. And we may only know whether Apple has gotten its mojo back for sure when the company holds is Worldwide Developer Conference in June. That’s traditionally one of the windows in which Apple makes big product announcements.
