Amazon reported weaker-than-expected revenue for the second quarter on Thursday and issued a disappointing forecast for the current period.

The shares slid as much as 6% in extended trading.

Net income at Amazon doubled from a year earlier to $13.5 billion, or $1.26 a share, from $6.75 billion, or 65 cents a share, reflecting mass cost-cutting efforts across the company.

The company posted revenue of $148 billion, a 10% increase that fell slightly below analyst expectations of $148.56 billion.

Sales in its online stores segment grew just 5% year over year.

In cloud, AWS beat estimates, growing 19% from a year earlier, but the unit is expanding at a slower rate than rivals Microsoft and Google.

Amazon forecast revenue in the current quarter to be between $154 billion and $158.5 billion, representing growth of 8% to 11% year over year.

Amazon, the sum of small annoyances

By Kevin Smith

It warned against slowing sales growth due to consumer reluctance.

It's well known that online sales are far from being the group's cash cow but a slowdown in large-scale commerce is nonetheless bad news.

At the same time, Amazon is pulling out all the stops to invest in artificial intelligence, which is weighing on the accounts.

Despite cautious consumer spending, advertising is still very dynamic.

Three black spots that explain the stock's decline
1. Lower-than-expected Q3 sales projections, linked to consumer spending.
2. AWS backlog growth normalizing, but still high (+19% year-on-year).
3. Increased investment in the second half of the year, particularly in AI.

The consumer is less frisky and the presumed benefits of AI, are slow to materialize, at least in the short term.

Amazon.com Inc. – AWS Continues to Accelerate

2Q24 revenue/PATMI was in line with our expectations.

1H24 revenue/PATMI was at 45%/55% of our FY24e forecasts.

Better-than-expected AWS strength (19% YoY) continues to support growth driven by customers migrating workloads from on-premises to the cloud.

Retail growth decelerated, in line with the company’s growth guidance, due to customers being cautious with spending.

We maintain the BUY recommendation with an unchanged target price of US$220.00, WACC of 6.4%, and terminal growth rate of 5%.

We increase our FY24e PATMI/CAPEX forecast by 8%/7% to account for margin improvement and higher CAPEX spending.

Margin strength is from scaling up of AWS and advertising, as well as AMZN’s improvements throughout the network that helps lower costs and improve delivery speeds.

Amazon: The Magnificent Seven stock worth buying right now

Amazon has a strong presence in three large markets. It runs the most popular e-commerce marketplace, as measured by monthly visitors. It is the third-largest advertising company in the U.S., and eMarketer says Amazon could take second place from Meta Platforms by the end of the decade. Finally, Amazon Web Services is the market leader in cloud infrastructure and platform services, meaning it's ideally positioned to monetize artificial intelligence (AI).

Amazon reported mixed financial results in the second quarter. Revenue increased 10% to $148 billion, missing the $148.6 billion forecasted by Wall Street. But generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) net income surged 94% to $1.26 per share, topping the $1.03 per share analysts anticipated.

Unfortunately, management also issued somewhat disappointing guidance.

The company expects operating income to increase 18% in the third quarter, while analysts expected 37% growth.

Amazon still has strong growth prospects in e-commerce, digital advertising, and cloud computing.

Retail e-commerce sales and digital ad spending are expected to grow at annual rates of 8% and 10%, respectively, through 2027, according to eMarketer.

Meanwhile, public cloud services revenue is forecasted to compound at 19% annually through 2028, according to IDC.

Indeed, Wall Street expects earnings per share to increase at 23% annually through 2027. That makes the current valuation of 38.5 times earnings look reasonable.

I say that because those figures give a PEG ratio of 1.7, a material discount to the three-year average of 2.9. Patient investors should feel confident buying a small position in Amazon today.
