US prosecutors demand Google divest Chrome to end search monopoly

The proposals are wide-ranging, including barring Google from re-entering the browser market for five years and insisting Google sell its Android mobile operating system if other remedies fail to restore competition.

Here are some of the demands that the US Justice Department (DOJ) lawyers have made in the case:
Divest Chrome browser
Android operating system
Browser ownership
Google search contracts
Agreements with publishers
Google search preference
Data sharing

What forcing Google to sell Chrome could mean

The search engine could sell for at least US$15 billion, says one analyst

Launched in 2008, Chrome dominates the browser market, dwarfing rivals Edge and Safari, developed by Microsoft and Apple, respectively.

Chrome, which is used by more than three billion people around the world, would sell for at least US$15 billion.

Trump in October indicated he opposes dismantling Google, believing such a move would be against the interests of the US internationally.

“China is afraid of Google” and a breakup would hurt the company, Trump reasoned at the time. Meanwhile, Trump has also accused Google of being unfair to conservatives.

DOJ to push Google to sell Chrome (Bloomberg)

What’s our take?

If the DoJ gets its way, Chrome could be up for grabs.

Should a sale occur, some estimate it could sell for at least $15-20bn, given the browser doesn’t generate revenue, but is more of a key data provider to its ads business.

Current antitrust scrutiny on other big tech players means finding an interested buyer who has big enough pockets and would be approved by the FTC might be tricky.

The judge can decide at a later date if a sale is necessary. That decision will be based on whether previous recommendations around data licensing, Android and AI are effective at creating a more competitive market.

Google on Monday said that it has overcome a key challenge in quantum computing with a new generation of chip, solving a computing problem in five minutes that would take a classical computer more time than the history of the universe.

The results released Monday came from a new chip called Willow that has 105 "qubits," which are the building blocks of quantum computers.

In a paper published in the journal Nature on Monday, Google said that it has found a way to string together the Willow chip's qubits so that error rates go down as the number of qubits goes up.

The company also says it can correct errors in real time, a key step toward making its quantum machines practical.
