Amazon ’s Prime Day is off to a strong start, lifting third-party sellers’ and other retailers’ online sales, early data shows.

On Tuesday, the first day of Amazon’s 48-hour sales event, online spending in the U.S. rose about 6% to $6.4 billion, making it the single-biggest e-commerce day so far this year, according to Adobe Analytics, which measures transactions at U.S. retail sites.

Prime Day kicked off Tuesday and runs through Wednesday.

Adobe expects total U.S. online sales to grow 9.5% year over year to $13.1 billion during the two-day event.

Last year, U.S. consumers spent more than $11.9 billion.

With Amazon Clinic, which has now been expanded to the entire U.S., the online leader offers a virtual health-care marketplace that enables customers to quickly get treatment for more than 30 common health concerns like urinary tract infections, pink eye, and erectile dysfunction.

"In addition to message-based consultations in 34 states, Amazon Clinic now supports video visits nationwide. Amazon Clinic offers customers 24/7 access to clinicians directly through Amazon.com and the Amazon mobile app," the company said in a news release.

Amazon.com announced 2Q23 results that beat expectations.

Revenue was US$134.4bn (up 11% YoY) vs est. US$131.5bn, and EPS came in at US$0.65, almost doubling consensus estimates of US$0.35.

The result beat was mainly due to the growth reacceleration in its core online retail business and the benefits arising from the company’s cost-cutting measures.

AWS, Amazon’s cloud computing segment, grew by 12% YoY – a deceleration from 16% in 1Q23, but was better than guidance of 11% growth.

Management said that AWS growth has stabilized as customers shift from cost optimization to new workload deployments.

The company expects 3Q23 sales to be between US$138bn-US$143bn, suggesting a 9% to 13% YoY growth, partly due to effect from its recent Prime Day event.

2Q23 revenue was in line with our expectation, while earnings exceeded.

1H23 revenue/PATMI at 47%/68% of our FY23e forecasts.

Earnings outperformance was due to higher-than-expected gross margins.

Revenue grew 10.8% YoY, beating top-end of company guidance.

AWS was up 12% and growth seems to have bottomed out.

We upgrade to a BUY rating with an increased DCF target price of US$175.00 (prev. US$120.00), with a WACC of 6.4% and terminal growth rate of 5%.

We increase our FY23e PATMI forecast by 39% to account for the higher margins as well as the lower CAPEX spending plans.
