Caterpillar

by Shaun Greiner

Share price: $19

Weak prices for oil and other commodities, along with a slowdown in China’s economy, are crimping demand for construction and mining equipment made by Caterpillar.

The firm recently cautioned that sales in 2017 won’t improve much over 2016. Yet its stock soared by 27% in the first 10 months of 2016.

CAT now trades at 27 times estimated earnings, well above its 10-year average P/E of 16, says Jim Corridore, an analyst with S&P Global Market Intelligence. He expects the shares to slide to $63 over the next 12 months.

ANOTHER GOOD SIGN FOR THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

Yesterday, we noted that the soaring share price of Thor Industries was a clear sign that the U.S. economy isn't in the dumps. But what about the global economy?

Today's chart of Caterpillar (CAT) gives us some insight...

Caterpillar – commonly known as "Cat" – is the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment. These are the tools used to build bridges, airports, roads, shopping malls, homes, and more. Like Thor Industries, Cat's share price rises and falls with economic activity.

With the election behind us, investors are expecting massive infrastructure projects in the U.S. Caterpillar is a one-stop shop for everything the government needs to complete these projects...

This year, investors have poured money into the stock, sending shares from $60 to $97, a new 52-week high. This gives us another reason to believe things can't be all that bad...

A LOOK AT THE 'TEMPERATURE' OF THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

Today, we're checking on one of the world's most reliable economic indicators...

Regular readers know we often gauge economic health by looking at consumer spending. When people are out buying swimming pools and big-screen TVs, it's a sign they feel good about the economy. However, we can also look at how governments and big companies are spending – for example, on construction projects...

Founded in 1925, Caterpillar (CAT) has grown to be the world's largest manufacturer of construction equipment. This $93 billion titan builds everything from asphalt pavers and backhoes to bulldozers and excavators.

And these machines are being put to work today... Caterpillar's latest quarterly sales and revenues jumped 35% from last year to $12.9 billion.

As you can see below, business has been good lately. Despite a recent pullback, shares are still up about 155% over the past two years.

As long as the U.S. and the rest of the world keep building more "stuff", this steady, long-term uptrend should continue...
