Venture Q408 dives 94%

By WINSTON CHAI

Continued losses from its CDO (collateralised debt obligation) investments and a weakening electronics sector dragged Venture Corporation's net income down by 93.9 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2008.

The contract manufacturer on Thursday reported a Q4 net profit of $4.6 million, a steep decrease from $75.2 million last year. Sales for the three months ended Dec 31, 2008 was down 5.9 per cent $9.06 billion.

For the full-year, Venture's net income dived 44.6 per cent to $167.5 million, from $302.7 million in 2008.

Mark to market charges of $114.5 million, coupled with a $6.3 million impairment charge for one of its associates, were cited as the main reasons for sharp profit decline. The company's 2008 revenue slid 2.3 per cent to $37.8 billion.

It is proposing a final dividend of 50 cents per share, down from the 58 cents it paid out to shareholders last year.

Not vested. Are the analysts are a bit too bullish ?

Singapore Hot Stocks-Venture gains on broker buy calls

SINGAPORE, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Shares of Venture Corp gained as much as 6.8 percent on Friday despite a 94 percent drop in quarterly net profit, helped by bullish analyst reports about the firm.

Nomura on Friday upgraded Venture, Singapore's largest electronics contract manufacturer, to "buy" from "neutral" citing the firm's higher margins and plan to maintain its dividend of S$0.50 a share.

Other brokerage firms with buy or overweight recommendations on Venture after the results included Credit Suisse, Citigroup, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch and Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp.

Venture said on Thursday its fourth quarter net profits tumbled 94 percent from a year ago mainly due to non-operational charges related to fair value and impairment losses.
