Thought the name Tan Thiam Hee sounded familiar... did a quick check - ah so he was formerly from Haw Par, Group Financial Controller and Company Secretary.

At approximately 2:45pm on 9 September 2008, a blast occurred on a barge that was undergoing a sea-fastening operation carried out by a subcontractor appointed by our subsidiary, Gems Marine Pte Ltd.

The blast resulted in a worker being slightly injured and damage sustained to surrounding properties. The Company is presently assisting the authorities with investigations into the cause of the accident.

It is anticipated that subject to the cause of the accident being established, claims may be made against our subsidiaries, Koon Construction and Transport Co., Pte Ltd and/or Gems Marine Pte Ltd in respect of the said injury and damages. The full extent of the said claims is not yet known but these should be covered by the relevant insurances and/or terms of the applicable contracts on allocation of risks. There will be some
financial impact to the Group but at this preliminary stage we do not think that such impact will be significant.

January 27, 2010, 4.19 pm (Singapore time)

Koon FY09 net profit up 440%

By CHEW XIANG

Construction firm Koon Holdings on Wednesday said full year profit for 2009 increased 440 per cent to S$10.7 million on a 10.6 per cent increase in sales to S$137.3 million.

The company said it will pay a final dividend of 1 Singapore cent a share, and a special dividend of 0.5 Singapore cent a share. Total payout for the year is 2.5 Singapore cents, including an interim 1 cent dividend already paid out.

Koon said increased profitability was achieved by better cost management, such as centralising procurement, closer monitoring of construction material and more in-house work.

It noted that while public sector demand remained firm, the group had been awarded fewer private sector contracts while there appears to be a trend of more very large or very small contracts. The first would require Koon to take on more risk, while the second have smaller margins and greater competition.

Koon said it was looking beyond Singapore for opportunities, with a particular focus on Vietnam.
