Billionaire investor Ackman says he is shorting 30-year Treasuries

He argued that if long-term inflation is 3% not 2%, the 30-year Treasury yield could rise to 5.5%, adding "and it can happen soon."

On Wednesday, the yield on the 30-year Treasurys climbed to 4.16%, the highest close of the year.

Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman lays down his investing ‘commandments’

by Eleanor Pringle

“We want to buy the best businesses in the world”. He described these as firms that are “simple, predictable, free-cash-flow generative, dominant companies with, as Warren Buffett would say, a moat around them.

Also on the Pershing Square checklist is a strong balance sheet and excellent governance.

Own the best, super-durable companies you can find with conservative balance sheets,” Ackman said.

“Buy them at attractive prices, and use our influence to make sure they’re managed and governed correctly.

“You don’t want a company that has to constantly raise money in order to implement a business plan.”

“Stay away from shorting stocks, avoid commodity-sensitive industries, and you do great,” he advised.

“There’s a part of investing that’s very simple…Just make sure you think about the potential for disruption, because we’re in a world where technology is a very dynamic force.”

Bill Ackman: The Fed will pivot to cuts in 2024 and it needs to be done ASAP

“I think the market expects sometime middle of next year. I think it’s more likely as early as Q1 [first quarter]” …

Ackman believes a weakening economy will “likely demand an earlier move…we’re seeing evidence of that in some of our companies…I have some concerns,” he said…

Ackman explained that the Fed sticking to the mid 5% range on rates, with inflation trending below 3%, will mean a “very high real rate of interest.”
