Also during the quarter, Mr Soros upped his stake in pharmacy chain CVS Caremark , oil sands developer Suncor Energy and retailer Target Corp. At the same time, Mr Soros slashed its holdings of pharma giant Pfizer, video rental chain Blockbuster BBI.N and cell phone maker Motorola.

Neat moves. Oil sands, the CIC bought into Canadian oil sands.
Pfizer will retrench 6,000 employees worldwide.

End of the world coming! Financial system collapsing! Oops, Dow up 273 :(

George Soros: "Crisis is far from over"
From Bloomberg:

Billionaire investor George Soros said “we have just entered Act II” of the crisis as Europe’s fiscal woes worsen and governments are pressured to curb budget deficits that may push the global economy back into recession.

“The collapse of the financial system as we know it is real, and the crisis is far from over,” Soros said today at a conference in Vienna. “Indeed, we have just entered Act II of the drama.”

Soros, 79, said the current situation in the world economy is “eerily” reminiscent of the 1930s with governments under pressure to narrow their budget deficits at a time when the economic recovery is weak.

Concern that Europe’s sovereign-debt crisis may spread sent the euro to a four-year low against the dollar on June 7 and has wiped out more than $4 trillion from global stock markets this year. Europe’s debt-ridden nations have to raise almost 2 trillion euros ($2.4 trillion) within the next three years to refinance, according to Bank of America Corp.

“When the financial markets started losing confidence in the credibility of sovereign debt, Greece and the euro have taken center stage, but the effects are liable to be felt worldwide,” Soros said.

Soros gained fame in the 1990s when he reportedly made $1 billion correctly betting against the British pound. He also wagered that Germany’s mark would appreciate after the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and that Japanese stocks would start to fall in the same year. His firm, Soros Fund Management LLC, manages about $25 billion.

Credit default swaps, which aim to protect bondholders against the risk of a default, are dangerous and a “license to kill,” Soros said today. CDSs should only be allowed if there is an insurable interest, he said.

The 100-300 points daily swings in the Dow and other global indeces in the past weeks make sense. It means volatiity have increased - prelude to a possible second dip. The fundamentals are very negative as emphasized by the many economic gurus and the technicals are very much still in line with fundamentals.

Ha Ha ... we trade what we believe.

Sometimes, we believe that economics is the the thing driving the market. However, it's actually liquidity that's driving the market.

Sometimes, we think we are smart. However, it's actually luck that was on our side.

Not trying to offend anybody. Just trying to tell myself to apply some independent thinking than to listen to these guys.

BTW, right at the bottom, didnt he mention that the whole financial system will collapse ?

Take care,

i agree with you take here...

if i believe that the fundamentals are so bad...and a second dip/crash is on-coming...i wont hesitate to go Short ...if i don't, then, i'm just kidding myself.... i'm only talk talk....纸上谈兵..

conversely, if i believe this is a mere correction and the world will overcome its present financial turmoil...then, i should go Long...if i don't, then again...i'm doubting my assessment...i'm procrastinating...i'm waiting for all stars to align with the centre of the milky way galaxy.... by then, 1 of 2 things would have happened

a) you are dead...
b) the market has gone on its way and ready to move opposite to your trade....
