Singtel to collaborate with Razer on e-payments and gaming

By Benjamin Cher

SINGAPORE (May 2): Singtel and Razer have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work together in the areas of e-payments, e-sports and other gaming-related digital media and telecommunication services in Southeast Asia.

The agreement will see Singtel and Razer create Southeast Asia’s largest connected e-payments network.

The two companies will also work on building the region’s e-sports ecosystem and community. Singtel’s Indonesian associate, Telkomsel has already launched a gaming league while the group’s Philippines associate, Globe, launched its gaming league two weeks ago.

Finally, both Singtel and Razer intend to develop gaming-related digital media and telecommunications services such as broadband plans, mobile services and e-sports content.

Singtel previously announced that it will be connecting its associates’ mobile wallets, with over 50 million registered wallet users and over 1 million merchant points across Asia.

Similarly, Razer’s recently-announced acquisition of e-payment company MOL Global gives it access to over 1 million offline payment points across Southeast Asia, as well as an online payment gateway which services companies like Lazada, Grab and Uniqlo.

“This is something we are focused on for our own domestic citizens, for example each of the telcos bringing their own wallets, if an Indonesian on holiday in Thailand brings his mobile wallet and makes a payment, they can pay by using a QR code, benefiting the local Indonesians, not just catering to a tourist from a certain country,” said Arthur Lang, CEO, Singtel International Group, on the latest MoU with Razer.

Lang compares the group’s collaboration with Razer in the field of e-payments as a “star alliance of wallets”, where each airline has its own brand but work together to create a better customer experience.

Min-Liang Tan, co-founder and CEO, Razer, says he is open to bringing in additional partners to the gaming company's collaboration with Singtel.

“The vision is not just about us but bringing the entire country and region cashless… our goal is to leverage on the scale Singtel has, and the network Singtel and MOL have at this point of time to move ahead quickly,” says Tan.

“With this partnership we are able to leapfrog this way ahead and create this potential scenario, where we can combine out networks for someone in Singapore, who crosses the causeway and be able to pay seamlessly,” he adds.

The United States accounted for 42% of its first-half revenue.
