DJ MARKET TALK: Lee & Man Paper Off 5.3% Post-1H

1530 [Dow Jones] Lee & Man Paper (2314.HK) tumbles 5.3% to HK$6.64 vs HK$7.25 midday, after reports net profit for fiscal 1H ending Sept. 30 +3% on-year at HK$839 million, making up 39.9% of full-year earning forecast of HK$2.10 billion pegged by Thomson Reuters.

Still, shares may not slide too much further from here, with stock trading at 18X annualized forward earnings, at slight discount vs Nine Dragons Paper's (2689.HK) 19X. Future earnings set to improve on capacity expansion;

LMP says to meet rising market demand, plans to start operation of 3 new production lines in Chongqing, Dongguan in 2011 with total annual design production capacity of 1.5 million tons.

Leveraging 12% stakeholder Nippon Paper's (3893.TO) experience, company will dedicate one of new production lines to high-end coated duplex board, marking breakthrough in new product development.

DJ MARKET TALK: Citi Cuts Lee & Man Paper Tgt To HK$2.4 Vs HK$3.1

1435 [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: Citigroup cuts Lee & Man Paper's (2314.HK) target price to HK$2.40 from HK$3.10 and keeps the stock at Sell.

It says key takeaways from the conference call with management are: virtually no volume growth in 1H12 so that the company will post 1H12 earnings decline on year (due in November) after record-high earnings in FY11;

Unlike bigger rival Nine Dragons Paper (2689.HK), Lee & Man has lower contributions from higher-margin products to lift margins; but good thing is LMP should incur lower bills discount charge compared with NDP.

Overall, Citi trims LMP's FY12-FY14 earnings forecasts by 4.0% on weaker pricing amid continued de-stocking among customers. LMP is flat at HK$2.64.

DJ MARKET TALK: JPM Cuts Lee & Man Paper Target; Too Early To Buy

1327 [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: JPMorgan lowers Lee & Man Paper's (2314.HK) target price to HK$3.50 from HK$3.70 on lower earnings forecasts and keeps the stock at Neutral.

It says LMP shares are up about 50% since reaching its 2011 low on Sep. 26, and believes the rapid rise is due to improving credit for LMP's SME customers and general improvement in sentiment towards industrial small- and mid-caps in China.

Still, Citi says that trends in containerboard and input prices indicate that pricing power is still weak in this industry, and it expects a gradual recovery in 2012 but now is "probably 12 months too early" to look for an improvement in pricing power or for LMP to significantly increase the profit.

Lee & Man Paper is up 2.3% at HK$3.63 at midday.

Would you buy at 3.90 (as just happened) if you knew the chairman sold millions of shares at 3.95 just a few days ago ?

Buy 2689 instead, even when numbers are not good. Owner is still buying. Technically though its a very hard trade with extreme shakeouts.
