DJ MARKET TALK: UBS Ups L'Occitane Target; Bullish On Outlook

1524 [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: UBS raises L'Occitane (0973.HK) target price to HK$25.40 from HK$20.00 after raising FY11-13 EPS estimates by 11%-16% to revise same store sales assumption, higher new store contribution ratio.

Says during recent non-deal roadshow, management reaffirmed its plan to double own store network in 5 years to around 1,500. Adds of 130-odd new stores to be opened in FY11, around 50 will be from emerging markets, with China contributing almost half of those.

"We believe L'Occitane's aspirational brand appeal and an upbeat outlook help support the valuation," says UBS. Keeps stock at Buy vs last off 2.8% at HK$21.00.

Today, let's look at newly listed L'Occitane International (0973), a cosmetics firm which has been in the business for more than 30 years and now operates 1,500 outlets in 80 countries.

For the nine months to December, it had a revenue of 462.7 million euros (HK$4.56 billion) and made a net profit of 66.4 million euros. Japan, the United States and France are its three largest markets, but it is expanding in China, Brazil, Russia, India and Mexico.

The firm listed locally last Friday. Its initial public offering was 159 times oversubscribed.

The offer price was HK$15.08 and it closed yesterday at HK$15.48, or 22.5 times next year's expected earnings.

I think L'Occitane's valuation is not pricey for a global brand with huge growth potential.

It's ard HK$23 today. Almost 53% in 6 months :o

Cosmetics look fine
Tuesday, November 30, 2010

French cosmetics firm L'Occitane International (0973) plans at least 60 new stores by the end of March after opening 62 in the first half of its financial year.

The expansion continues after its net profit grew 19.1 percent to 29.85 million euros (HK$303.91 million) in the six months to September 30.

Sales rose nearly 28 percent to 331.2 million euros on strong demand in Hong Kong, China, Britain and Russia.

Sales in Hong Kong were up 28.2 percent, China 43 percent, Britain 35 percent and Russia 44 percent.

But Japan will remain L'Occitane's largest market for the next few years, managing director Andre Hoffmann said yesterday. Japan accounted for 25.3 percent of total sales in the April- September period.

After opening 62 stores new stores around the world in the first half, Hoffmann said, "the growth in the second half will be similar." It had 826 stores by September.

First-half earnings per share for L'Occitane International were 2.1 euro cents and it did not declare an interim dividend. The intention is to maintain a strong balance sheet for growth, the firm said in a statement.

Shares of L'Occitane rose 1.36 percent to HK$22.3 yesterday, which was 47.9 percent higher than the offer price of HK$15.08 in May. MANDY LO

DJ MARKET TALK: L'Occitane 1H Results Solid But Valuation Lofty

0815 [Dow Jones] L'Occitane (0973.HK) unlikely to rise too much on reporting 1H11 net profit +19% on-year at EUR29.8 million (HK$304 million). If using 30% ratio (1H10 net profit about 30% of full-year earnings), FY11 earnings may come in at EUR99.3 million vs EUR107.6 million now pegged by Thomson Reuters, although actual number may be higher given continued new store opening.

Still, L'Occitane shares appears running ahead of fundamentals, valued about 30X forward earnings, suggesting investors pricing in growth potential, especially from emerging markets such as China, Brazil.

Stock +1.4% at HK$22.30 yesterday.

DJ MARKET TALK: L'Occitane Off 6.1%; Earnings, Earnings, Earnings

1145 [Dow Jones] L'Occitane's (0973.HK) post-results fall today illustrate importance of maintaining strong earnings growth, especially for sectors, stocks already trading at lofty valuations.

L'Occitane last down 6.1% at HK$20.95, after posts 1H net profit +19% on-year at EUR29.8 million (HK$304 million), as growth rate doesn't appear to support stock trading at about 30X forward earnings.

The fact - I visited L'Occitane while I was in Dusseldorf.

Nice location, and good promotions for tourists!

Outlet had a more diversified range of cosmetics which were not available in Singapore (Asia)!
