2022/01/28

Jefferies reduced the 2021-23E net profit and sales of NONGFU SPRING (09633.HK) , to reflect the impact from COVID-19 pandemic and cost pressure in 2H21 and 1Q22.

The broker anticipated that NONGFU SPRING's 2021 net profit and sales will expand by 29% YoY each, to RMB6.8 billion and RMB28.2 billion, respectively.

BofAS Adds NONGFU SPRING (09633.HK) TP to $48.3, Rating Buy

NONGFU SPRING (09633.HK) demonstrated a strong growth momentum throughout 1Q22 with double-digit revenue growth, reported BofA Securities.

The company's upward momentum, however, was severely disrupted by the pandemic-induced lockdowns in 2Q22.

The broker forecast the revenue of NONGFU SPRING to decline in April and May, followed by a sequential recovery in June.

The company's business performance is expected to recover progressively in June, as the beverage sales volume will likely benefit from the reopenings across China and improving demand heading into the summer season, the broker illustrated.

BofA Securities added the target price for the stock from $46.3 to $48.3, with its rating restated at Buy.

NONGFU SPRING Once Falls ~4% Amid Boycott by Netizens; Company Founder Clarifies 1st Fortune Not Made from Wahaha

Zong Qinghou, the founder of Wahaha, passed away recently. Chinese online circles are accusing Zhong Shanshan, founder of NONGFU SPRING (09633.HK) of being ungrateful to Zong, and even initiated a boycott of Zhong's company.

It was rumoured that Zhong Shanshan was a sales agent of Wahaha and gained his first fortune by selling Wahaha goods across province lines, in breach of the agent agreement.

Zhong clarified in a statement that he made his first fortune from selling curtain fabrics in Hainan, but not Wahaha.

Zhong Shanshan added that while NONGFU SPRING and Wahaha exchanged lawsuits during the competition between natural and pure water in the early 2000s, he and Zong Qinghou eventually made peace in the presence of Hangzhou's main leaders at the time. He also said his respect for Zong Qinghou's entrepreneurial spirit has never wavered.

NONGFU SPRING once declined 3.9% today (5 Mar) to as low as $40.75. It trades now at $40.9, down 3.54%, with a volume of 2.663 million shares, involving $110 million.

China’s nationalists put water firm Nongfu Spring under fire, dousing private sector’s flickering confidence

Boycott by vocal internet users over perceived transgressions has put China’s biggest water company, Nongfu Spring, under a firestorm of criticism

With nationalist sentiment quick to anger and slow to forgive, many wonder whether other private companies will be next, stifling growth

by Mandy Zuo

China’s drinks giant Nongfu Spring, the country’s largest bottled water producer, has become the latest target in a series of attack campaigns from an increasingly vocal constituency of nationalists online, prompting concerns over what effect this group may have on an already fragile private sector.

The company, helmed by China’s wealthiest individual Zhong Shanshan, has fallen under a wave of criticism for the perceived Japanese styling of its packaging, just days after it came under fire for Zhong’s competition with another water brand and his son’s American citizenship.
