i think Ajisen did the placement thru GS on Friday.

And the following was the analyst report from GS on April 6

DJ MARKET TALK: Goldman Starts Ajisen At Buy; HK$18.50 Target

1504 [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: Goldman Sachs starts Ajisen (China) (0538.HK) at Buy and sets the target price at HK$18.50 (based on 35X FY10 P/E).

"China's restaurant market is under-penetrated compared with developed countries." The house expects a 30% net income CAGR during 2011-2013.

"Strong growth supported by both footage expansion and store earnings improvement provides a more solid foundation against its peers." Strategic alliance implies stable long-term footage expansion, as Ajisen has cooperated with more than 30 hypermarkets/department stores and it's now the preferred brand in these stores' new expansion plans.

The stock is up 6.8% at HK$16.08.

Not vested. This is a good example of where "Buy & Hold" would have worked. It eventually became a 3 bagger from it's low..

Ajisen in the soup over not coming clean on additives by Grace Cao

Monday, August 01, 2011

Noodle chain Ajisen (China) Holdings (0538) was accused of not disclosing it had been fined for using additives in its noodles last year.

The franchisee paid a penalty of more than 780,000 yuan (HK$944,580) for using illegal additives in 4.58 million packages of instant noodles in 2009.

However, this was not disclosed in the company's 2010 annual report.

Ajisen (China), one of the largest restaurant chains in the mainland, reportedly used cheap flavoring powder instead of pork bone in its noodle soup.

The company admitted the soup was diluted from base concentrate and other ingredients, but said no powder had been used. One kilogram of soup concentrate can make about 100 bowls of noodle soup, its spokesman said.

The nutrition content, however, is 30 times less than claimed in an earlier advertisement - four times the calcium content of milk and 10 times that of meat.

Ajisen shares plunged nearly 10 percent on Monday when the soup report came out. The noodle chain tried to reduce the impact by rewriting the nutrition information at its Hong Kong outlets on Tuesday. But the stock tumbled for another two days.

Ajisen closed at HK$15.18 last Friday- sinking 13 percent compared with its price on July 22.

At present, the company has 588 branches nationwide. It plans to spend 230 million yuan to add another 150 outlets this year.

DJ MARKET TALK: Ajisen Falls 15.0% On Illegal Food Additives Report

1343 [Dow Jones] Ajisen (China) (0538.HK) tumbles 15.0% to HK$13.04 with volume, at 8.5 million shares, nearly doubling Friday's full-day volume, hurt by a Shanghai Daily report Monday, which cites the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision as reporting the noodle chain was fined CNY780,000 by Shanghai authorities last year for using an illegal food additive.

Ajisen (China) didn't immediately respond to a request seeking comment on Monday. The stock was already beaten down 12.9% last week due to media reports that the noodle chain uses cheap powders and other instant seasoning to make its soup, rather than boiled pig bones as its advertisements say.

The slew of negative publicity clearly is affecting investors' confidence in the high-growth stock, with its high P/E valuation, still at 31X historic P/E despite its recent fall from a July 22 peak of HK$18.00, making it vulnerable to profit-taking.

Ajisen feels heat over soup claims
Thursday, August 04, 2011

Ajisen (China) Holdings (0538), a chain of Japanese-style noodle restaurants, is being investigated in the mainland over advertising claims.

The Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce began a probe of Ajisen on July 28 for alleged misleading advertising.

Ajisen shares fell 2.7 percent to HK$12.22 yesterday. The stock has slumped 24 percent since July 25, when China Daily, citing media reports, said it used powder and instant seasoning for its noodle soup not pig bones as claimed.

On July 26, the chain - which has 588 outlets in the mainland and 32 in Hong Kong - said it uses pig bones to make a soup concentrate that shops dilute. "Investors are concerned if the company is hiding anything else," said Titus Wu, an analyst with DBS Vickers.

DJ Ajisen: Authorities Probing Allegations Company Exaggerated Nutritional Value Of Soup B
HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Noodle restaurant chain Ajisen (China) Holdings Ltd. (0538.HK) said Wednesday Chinese authorities are probing allegations the company exaggerated the nutritional value of the soup base served with its noodle products, and notes the company expects a recent of spate of negative reports to have an impact on its second-half profit.

Ajisen chairwoman Poon Wai told reporters Wednesday that the company is confident the investigation will be conducted fairly.

She noted that sales at some of the company's outlets in China fell by up to 35% following the news media reports, but added sales have begun to stabilize in August.

Earlier reports asserted Ajisen China overstated the nutritional value of its soup base by citing misleading information about its calcium content. The noodle chain earlier this month apologized for its "misinterpretation" of the calcium content of its soups. The company said it had cited the calcium in its soup concentrates, rather than that of their diluted forms.

Ajisen's shares have fallen sharply in recent weeks amid the negative publicity, which also involved allegations the company was fined last year for using an unsanctioned chemical ingredient.

Poon pledged improving hygiene at its restaurants and quality control of noodle products are among measures to regain consumer confidence.

Ajisen (China) holds the exclusive franchise for Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China. The company is controlled by Chinese businesswoman Poon, who owns a 47.1% stake.

Ajisen said this month it has 553 stores in China and 39 in Hong Kong.

DJ MARKET TALK: GS Cuts Ajisen Target To HK$11.50 Vs HK$13.60

1004 [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: Goldman Sachs cuts Ajisen's (0538.HK) target to HK$11.50 from HK$13.60, after the house lowers its FY11-FY13 EPS estimates by 26%, 15% and 10% to reflect a slower-than-expected customer traffic recovery and increasing expenses.

"Ajisen has come up with a concrete promotion plan which we think could help speed up customer traffic recovery starting December."

The promotions include coupons in newspapers/calendars sold in the store, radio advertisements, and will be focused in Shanghai, Wuhan and Xiamen, which experienced a significant customer traffic drop following the soup base incident (with same-store sales growth 2-3 percentage points below average). It keeps the stock at Buy.

The stock is up 0.3% at HK$9.36.

Japanese-style restaurant chain Ajisen (China) Holdings Ltd said it expects its 2011 profit to decline 20-30 percent from the previous year, mainly due to a decrease in revenue after some media reports raised concerns over its products around the third quarter of last year.

DJ Ajisen (China): 2011 Profit Fell By 20%-30% On Decline In Revenue

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Noodle restaurant chain Ajisen (China) Holdings Ltd. (0538.HK) said Friday its 2011 profit likely fell by 20%-30% due to a decrease in revenue.

The Hong Kong-listed company said in a statement sales were affected by the negative media reports on the company. Local media reported in late July the company uses cheap powders and other instant seasoning to make its soup base, rather than boiling pork bones for the soup as advertised.

The reports also suggest that Ajisen exaggerated the nutritional value of its soup base.

Ajisen has repeatedly stated that the soup concentrates used at its restaurants are made at centralized food factories by grinding fresh pork bones, which are mixed with other ingredients before boiling and condensing into a concentrate.

The concentrate is then diluted at its restaurants into pork-bone soup base.

Should be trading within consolidation range.

If there's no more major issues, every dip may be a buying opportunity.
