<China: Research Report>C Suisse Expects Coal Prices to Rebound in 3Q; CHINA SHENHUA Still Industry Top Pick

Credit Suisse, in its report, said NDRC trimmed coal prices with a target below RMB570 per ton.

The research house believed such move will knock down prices in short run but prices will pick up in 3Q with demand peak.

Credit Suisse's preferences to raw material markets in order were: steel> coal> cement.

CHINA SHENHUA (01088.HK) remained the top pick of the research house with target price of $23.

China: <Research Report>Deutsche: Coal Stocks' Fundamentals Stable; Recommends to Accumulate on Correction

Deutsche Bank, in its report, said the policy of National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in relation to supply increase and coal price restrictions hurt the share prices of Chinese coal stocks.

Yet, the research house believed the demand/ supply fundamentals were more critical to the profit and share prices of coal makers, as evidenced by the announcement of NDRC in last two years.

Deutsche Bank believed that the industry was undervalued amid the stretched impact from policy concern, recommending investors to accumulate on correction.

It reiterated Buy on CHINA SHENHUA (01088.HK), YANZHOU COAL (01171.HK) and CHINA COAL (01898.HK) with target prices of $30.5, $15.6 and $5.2.

China suffers worst power blackouts in a decade, as post-coronavirus export boom, coal shortage hit supply

China’s imported thermal coal accounted for about 7 per of domestic supply in 2019, when it mined or imported about 3.2 billion tonnes, according to a note by Nanhua Futures. The country consumed 2.9 billion tonnes of thermal coal last year.

Coal shares tumble on output increase

The National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planning agency, said the average daily coal output of state-owned enterprises has increased 8 percent since September 27.

It aims to increase coal output to 12 million tons a day, and will give the fuel priority in deliveries through ports and over railroads.

Officials in Yulin, a coal mining hub in Shaanxi province, have asked state-owned mines there to immediately lower prices by 100 yuan (HK$122) a tonne, with harsh measures being threatened for any companies that don't comply.
