World Reserves Of Green Coffee Drop To 5-Year Low

By IFC Markets (Ara Zohrabian)

Jan 23, 2018

The US reserves of green coffee fell to the 3-year low in December 2017.

According to the Green Coffee Association (GCA), the green coffee reserves declined by almost 300 thousand bags (60 kg) in November of 2017.

The decline continued in December for the fifth month in a row and amounted to 106 thousand bags more.

Currently, the US green coffee reserves are 6.63 mln bags. Note that the European Coffee Federation (ECF) reported a decrease in the European coffee reserves by 5.3% in November.

World green coffee reserves dropped to the 5-year low of 29.3 mln bags at the end of the last year.

The main reason for this was the weak coffee crop in Brazil because of the drought in 2017. The crop was only 45 mln bags.

This year the coffee crop is expected to grow to 54.5-58.5 mln bags. Of these, Robusta coffee crop may amount to about 13 mln bags, compared to 10.7 mln in 2017.

Coffee quotes may strongly depend on the weather. Note that Arabica coffee is by more than 1.5 times more expensive than Robusta coffee.

Theoretically, the closing in of their prices may increase Robusta coffee quotes.

Americans are drinking a daily cup of coffee at the highest level in six years: survey

Sixty-four percent of Americans age 18 or over said they had a cup of coffee the previous day in 2018. That compares with 62 percent in 2017 and was roughly on par with levels last seen in 2012.

At-home preparation continues to be the dominant spot for demand, with 79 percent of those surveyed saying they had had a cup of coffee at home the previous day. Coffee consumed at cafes and other out-of-home locations totaled 36 percent.

Gourmet represents over half the market, he said. Major coffee roasters have been trying to tap into it. Folgers maker JM Smucker is rolling out a new premium line this year and Nestle last year bought a majority stake in specialty chain Blue Bottle Coffee.

Use of smartphone apps and delivery services remains niche. Nine percent of Americans who drank coffee in the past week said they had ordered it through an app, the survey showed.

News Of Coffee Surplus Knocks Prices Down Even As Farmers Balk

By Dr. Duru

Dec 12, 2017

“The world coffee market is likely to see a larger global surplus in the 2018/19 season with production boosted by an on-year in Brazil’s biennial crop cycle, CoffeeNetwork said on Monday.

The analysts said in a report that based on a “low-end” forecast of 55 million 60-kg bags for Brazil’s crop and stable production in Colombia and Vietnam there could be a global surplus of 3.7 million bags in 2018/19, up from an anticipated 0.9 million in the prior season.”

Coffee inventories in Brazil will fall 61 percent to 1.04 million bags by June 2018, according to Santos, Brazil-based exporter Comexim Ltda.

In Vietnam, stockpiles fell 69 percent to 1.18 million bags at the end of last season, the lowest since 2011-12, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates.”

Coffee Waste Is Now Fetching a 480% Premium Over Coffee Itself

Prices for dried husks are outstripping those for beans.

Aida Batlle grows coffee on her family’s farm in the hills surrounding El Salvador’s Santa Ana Volcano. Like generations before her, she had little use for the skin that encases the beans, so she’d turn it into cheap fertilizer or, more frequently, trash it.

Then one day, walking past some husks drying in the sun, a smell hit her, a good smell: hibiscus and other floral aromas. It dawned on her, she says, that some value might be extracted from what she had long considered refuse.

So she steeped the husks in hot water and had a taste. “Immediately I started calling customers to try it,” she says.

Global Warming Could Kill Much of the World’s Coffee

By Paul Ausick

For the 2015–2016 coffee marketing year (October through September), global coffee farmers harvested nearly 72 million 132-pound bags of Arabica coffee worth an estimated $13.8 billion.

And while Arabica coffee is grown in tropical zones all over the world, wild Arabica coffee plants are found only in the humid forests of Ethiopia and South Sudan.

The population of those wild plants could be cut by 50% to 80% in the next 70 years,

The land area on which wild Arabica may be found and the amount of land on which Arabica is grown are projected to decline by 30% in many cases.

About 60% of world coffee production is Arabica and the other 40% is canephora (commonly called Robusta).

A new Arabica plant takes three or four years to bear first fruit and another five to eight years to reach its maximum productivity.

If the plants are coppiced (cut down to just a bare stump) when they reach eight to 15 years of age, they usually return to full productivity.

Production declines set in when the plants are about 25 years old, and the average life expectancy of a plant is 40 years. Coppiced plants may last 50 to 60 years.

Coffee caps worst week in 22 years on overflowing bean glut

The glut is so bad that warehouses in Brazil, the world's biggest grower and exporter, have never been this full.

Trucks in the country's coffee heartland are waiting days to unload cargo collected from a record crop.

Prices in New York, the global benchmark, tumbled 14 per cent this week.

By contrast, robusta beans, used in instant coffee and at-home blends, are holding up a bit better.

Robusta futures in London are down less than 2 per cent this year, while arabica has tumbled 12 per cent.

Meanwhile, there are have been some rare deliveries of Brazilian beans to warehouses approved by ICE Futures US. That could signal that suppliers in the nation are still holding a big chunk of the 2020 crop.
