Hurricane Harvey May Damage Cotton Crops

Aug 30, 2017

By Ara Zohrabian

The largest cotton plantations in the US are situated in Texas.

It is assumed that Hurricane Harvey and the subsequent flooding destroyed 400-500 thousand bales of cotton (217 kg in the 1st bale).

South Texas Cotton and Grain Association estimated the initial damage of $150 mln, but the data will be updated.

Agriculture - Cotton

Cotton prices are surging as flooding and heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Harvey in Texas and Louisiana have raised worries over the quantity and quality of the cotton crop.

Notably, both are the largest cotton-producing states in the country.

Now, Hurricane Irma is also threatening the supply of cotton in Florida, another cotton producer state.

Given this, iPath Bloomberg Cotton Subindex Total Return ETN (BAL) and iPath Pure Beta Cotton ETN CTNN are set to gain this week.

Chart of the day: Cotton set for bull run

by Nicole Elliott

Volume in cotton futures traded on Zhengzhou’s Commodity Exchange has picked up significantly this year, part of China’s effort to expand its commodity markets.

This is interesting because price action this year has been contained in a relatively small but well-defined trading band.

We see this as part of the initial stages of what ought to turn into a new bull market, which started with last year’s almost record low.

Note how the top of the Ichimoku cloud has helped edge the candles higher over the past five weeks and we may manage a weekly close above trend-line resistance.

This would confirm an imminent rally to the first measured target at 17,000 yuan (US$2,604) per tonne.

The double threat to China’s cotton industry: warmer weather and the hungry mirid bug

Over two decades, as farmers of China’s largest cash crop have used a strain of cotton that’s resistant to bollworms, another, more voracious pest has been able to thrive

China’s cotton production is forecast to be 6 million tonnes in the current crop year of 2017/2018, accounting for 21.75 per cent of the world’s total production, according to USDA estimates.

The figure for India is 6.2 million tonnes, accounting for more than 22 per cent (22.47 per cent) of total production.

The industry is a leading employer in China, with around 300 million people involved in cotton production in 24 out of 31 provinces.

The United States is the world’s top cotton exporter and China’s top overseas supplier. It shipped more than 500,000 tonnes to China in 2017.

Tariffs on US cotton would drive up its price and mean less is imported into China, putting even more pressure on the domestic industry to produce – and making the mirid bug threat an even greater concern.
