Porcine Potential

China has more than 400 million pigs, over half the world’s herd; the country also has a serious outbreak of African swine fever that’s been spreading since emerging in 2018.

While it doesn’t harm human beings, the disease can be 100 percent lethal for pigs.

This week brought news of more infections, with an outbreak confirmed Jan. 1 at a farm that had about 73,000 hogs.

There’s concern the outbreak will get a stronger grip within Asia’s top economy, and may jump to neighboring states, imperiling producers across the region.

Should that happen, China may go overseas to supplement supplies, benefiting the U.S. even as the trade war drags on. That may also benefit chicken demand and prices.

More piggies go to the market in China amid swine fever outbreak, leading to cheaper pork

Prices of wholesale pork down 15 per cent from January 2018

Farmers rush herds to market amid disease containment campaign

With so many pigs having either been destroyed or taken to market early to avoid being swept up in containment efforts, a shortage of the Chinese staple is expected in the second half of the year, experts say.

Pork production in China could drop by as much as 20 per cent in 2019. Meanwhile, the sow herd has declined by about 15 per cent across the countrys. About 30 per cent of medium-sized farms in the north and northeast have liquidated sow as prices have dropped.

Pigs fly: China pork producers surge as swine disease cuts supply

by Dominique Patton

BEIJING (Reuters) - Shares in China’s leading pig producers have soared to record levels despite one of the worst disease outbreaks in years, as investors bet on tightening pork supplies and strong government support for leading producers.

Prices fell partly because of African swine fever.

But analysts say prices for live pigs have bottomed and could rise from 12 yuan per kilogram currently to as much as 20 yuan in the second half, as supplies plunge and farmers face challenges in restocking farms.

Xiong Kuan, analyst at Cofco Futures, expects a 20 percent drop in supplies. Others say it could be as much as 30 percent.

PRC May Import 300K Tons US Pork This Yr, Subject to Swine Flu Outbreak: Wire

China will likely import as much as 300,000 metric tons of American pork in 2019, 81% higher than 2017's 166,000 tonnes, as Bloomberg quoted from insiders, but the total volume will depend on the spread of African Swine Fever in Mainland China.

Beijing may take such import hike as part of its commitment in bolstering purchases of farm goods from Washington under trade talks, said the report.

China's pig disease outbreak pushes up global pork prices

by Joe Mcdonald and Sam Mcneil

China produces and consumes two-thirds of the world's pork, but output is plunging as Beijing destroys herds and blocks shipments to stop African swine fever.

Importers are filling the gap by buying pork as far away as Europe, boosting prices by up to 40% and causing shortages in other markets.

Swine Flu was first reported in August in China's northeast. Since then, 1 million pigs have died and the disease has spread to 31 of China's 34 provinces.

China's shortfall is likely to be so severe it will match Europe's annual pork output and exceed U.S. production by 30%.

This year's Chinese pork output might fall by up to 35%.

The USDA expects China's pork imports to soar 41% this year over 2018 to 2.2 million tons.

The USDA forecasts China's total hog herd will shrink by 18% this year to 350 million animals, the lowest level since the 1980s.
