G Sachs: Cobalt, Lithium, Nickel Battery Metals Bull Mkt Is Over

Goldman Sachs estimated a fall in the prices of cobalt, lithium and nickel, being the three key battery metals, in the coming two years as green energy investors were rushing into the market too quickly.

Despite a demand spike, Goldman believed the battery metals bull market was over for now.

While long-term metals prospects stayed strong, the broker assumed a sharp lithium price correction given oversupply amid investor exuberance. The metal shall average under US$54,000/ ton this year, below the spot price of US$60,000/ ton. It would drop further to an average price of just over US$16,000/ ton in 2023.

BYD Chair: CN Lithium Resources Can Meet Demand of Full Electrification of 300M Cars in CN

BYD COMPANY (01211.HK) Chairman Wang Chuanfu said that China has recently scouted tremendous volume of lithium mines, explaining that the tight supply was due to rapid market growth with the exploration failing to catch up the speed, Chinese media reported.

The overall lithium resources of China is adequate, which can satisfy the demand of comprehensive electrification of 300 million cars nationwide, Wang added.

Lithium price may fall by 25 per cent in 2023, offering relief for global electric car makers, Chinese miner says

The price of lithium carbonate may drop to 400,000 yuan a ton in 2023, from mid-November’s record 600,000 yuan a ton, said Sinomine Resource Group’s chairman

More mine supply will push the market into a surplus next year and help soften prices, BYD’s executive vice-president said

Iran Discovers World’s Second Largest Lithium Reserve

The Islamic Republic of Iran, discovered one of the world’s largest lithium reserves, according to a report published by Press TV on 27 February.

According to a senior official of the Iranian Ministry of Industry, Mine, and Trade (MIMT), the lithium deposits could contain some 8.5 million metric tons (MT) ready for extraction, which would make it one of the largest global discoveries.

Currently, Chile is the second biggest producer of lithium in 2022, with around 39,000 MT. The country’s reserves are the largest in the world, with 9.3 million MT. Until now, the second largest reserves were said to be in Australia, with 3.8 MT.

China could control a third of the world’s lithium by 2025

UBS expects Chinese-controlled mines, including projects in Africa, to raise output to 705,000 tons by 2025, from 194,000 tons in 2022. That would lift China’s share of the mineral critical to electric-vehicle batteries to 32% of global supply, from 24% last year.

UBS sees lepidolite in China accounting for 280,000 tons of lithium in 2025, or 13% of global supply, from 88,000 tons last year.

Lepidolite, a lithium-bearing rock often overlooked as poor quality and environmentally unsound because of its low yield and high energy costs.
