Why a global trade war might confound investors’ flight to the Japanese yen for safety

David Brown says given the state of the Japanese economy and trade war fears, the yen is not necessarily a safe haven for investors

For savvy investors, the yen is not so much a bellwether for global market stability, but more a proxy for how Japanese funds feel about the state of investing abroad.

In the coming months, the yen is stuck between three conflicting forces:-
1. conviction that Japan’s recovery prevails
2. confidence that global stability is maintained combined with
3. a need to play safe

Why the Japanese yen’s prospects continue to be rosy and there is little policymakers can do about it

Neal Kimberley says worries about the US-China trade war are fuelling demand for the yen, strengthening the currency to Japanese exporters’ dismay

Meanwhile, China’s looser monetary policy at a time when other central banks are tightening their belts underpins the drop in the yuan’s value

To the extent that market concerns about Italy might mean some less demand for euros, those concerns could also translate into a lower value for the euro versus the yen and is arguably reflected in the downward move in the euro-yen exchange rate over the last month.
