Ringgit’s decline due to 1MDB shock and lack of competitiveness in Malaysia post-Asian financial crisis, says World Bank economist

by Zaf Seraj

The Thai baht and South Korea’s won outperformed the ringgit because those countries arguably reformed the most after the financial crisis.

China’s economic deceleration and the recent hike in the United States’ interest rates have only impact the value of the ringgit slightly.

A country’s currency reflects its societal, economic and political vibrancy.

The Vietnamese dong performed better than the ringgit despite Vietnam’s heavy reliance on China’s exports.

The ringgit has plummeted close to the level of 1998. Has the past 26 years been wasted?

The ringgit will continue falling. Here’s why

by K. Kathirgugan

Since 1970, we’ve gone from having RM4.1 billion in circulation to RM2.4 trillion now. This is an eye-watering 580-times increase in money supply in the span of 54 years.

That comes up to an average of about a 10% increase in money supply every year. This means our base annual inflation rate, excluding any extenuating factors that might cause the prices of goods and services to increase, is 10%.

If you had RM100,000 ten years ago, that money can only buy RM38,500 worth of goods in real terms today. Almost two thirds of your money has been wiped out in a mere 10 years.

Three considerations for the ringgit

By LEE HENG GUIE

Global crude oil prices collapsed in 2014-2016, which had impacted the government’s oil-related revenue and oil exports, as well as dampened investors’ sentiment on the ringgit.

The alleged embezzlement of 1MDB money between 2009 and 2012 went unchallenged until a full implosion in 2015. The revelations became a major political scandal in Malaysia, triggering investors’ concern and confidence, domestic protests and voters’ backlash.

Domestic political uncertainties that have characterised Malaysian politics since the 14th General Election held on May 9, 2018, including four prime ministers, leading to unclear policy directions, loss of competitiveness and lower investor confidence.

First Consideration: Strengthening the foundations for growth
Second Consideration: Restoring economic agents’ confidence on macroeconomic variables
Third Consideration: Sustainable investment climate
