Vested - I am not an expert in financial analysis but I believed Sapphire has posted a decent Q3 result.

Sapphire: Reports 9M2010 NPAT Of S$88.4 Million On Contributions From Special Steel And Fair-Value Gain Of HKSE-Listed Mine Operator.
08 Nov 2010

"Sapphire Corporation Limited said its net profit attributable to equity holders for the January-September period soared to S$88.4 million from S$3.6 million for 9M2009, lifted by higher contributions from its steel subsidiary and a fair-value gain on a 9.2%-owned mine operator listed in Hong Kong. The higher profit was achieved on the back of a 27.6% increase in revenue to S$71.1 million for 9M2010 from S$55.8 million for 9M2009, largely contributed by the sales from Nejiang Chuanwei Special Steel Co., Ltd, a 70%-owned subsidiary of Sapphire. For 9M2010, Sapphire consolidated the full nine months of revenue from Special Steel compared to four months in 9M2009."

Extracted from the latest financial report.

"On the corporate front, in a bid to raise investor interest and enhance shareholder value, the Company is currently exploring a transfer to the SGX Mainboard as well as the consolidation of its shares."

This might finally be Sapphire’s time to shine

By Chan Chao Peh

SINGAPORE (Oct 7): The patience of long-time Sapphire shareholders might have been tested with the losses suffered in the earlier years and a share price that has seen two rounds of consolidation and a drop of almost 50% in five years.

Nevertheless, Teh Wing Kwan, group CEO of Sapphire Corp, is confident that the recent positive developments at Sapphire will be acknowledged.

“Shareholders may take comfort in how we’ve guided the market, how aggressive we are in rebuilding a new Sapphire, and to also clear off lingering perceptions of the old Sapphire. There is no question,” he says.

Sapphire’s main business is now the construction of stations and tunnels and other work for metro railway systems in Chinese cities, following the RMB360.4 million ($73.9 million) acquisition of Ranken Infrastructure in September last year.

With two recent contract wins, Sapphire’s order book stands at RMB2.8 billion, which will help the company improve its earnings this year and reverse the earlier years of losses.

Before Sapphire went into railway infrastructure, its core business was in steel milling and the processing of vanadium, a mineral used to strengthen steel.

In FY2013, the company suffered a massive loss when it wrote down its steel business and ended the year $157.2 million in the red — much deeper than $29.4 million in losses for FY2012. Teh explains that unbridled capacity expansion in the boom years led to a 40% collapse in prices once the slowdown started, even though costs remained high.
