Singapore Telecommunications- Potential pitfall in Indonesia. (SELL/S$3.22/Target: S$3.16)

Maintain SELL. We value SingTel at S$3.16 based on sum-of-the-parts (SOTP).

We prefer M1 and StarHub for exposure to the telecommunications industry in Singapore.

Valuation supportive; Buy rating

Over the past 2 years, SingTel PE has derated from over 14x PE to current level of 12x. We believe this is because SingTel’s earnings declined in FY11 and market views SingTel as an ex-growth stock.

We expect SingTel’s earnings to grow again from FY12 and PE could expand.

Our price target of $3.60 is based on sum-of-the-parts.

Yield 5.5% to 7.7%

RESEARCH ALERT-JPMorgan upgrades SingTel to overweight

SINGAPORE, Oct 24 (Reuters) - JPMorgan has upgraded Southeast Asia's largest telecom firm Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) to overweight from neutral and raised its target price to S$3.60 from S$3.40.

STATEMENT: JPMorgan said it expects contributions from SingTel's regional assets to improve, with contribution from its associates to increase by 12 percent in fiscal 2012.

The brokerage also believes that Singapore's national broadband network (NBN) project will dampen competition and cement SingTel's dominance, and expects the company to capture 60 percent of the NBN market.

"SingTel has the best balance sheet among Singapore telcos," JPMorgan said, adding that the company could pay out higher-than-expected dividends.

At 0333 GMT, SingTel shares were 0.63 percent higher at S$3.21, and have gained 5.3 percent since the start of the year.

Indian headwinds

Over the weekend, it was reported that the Central Bureau of Investigation in India, is investigating SingTel over allegedly providing international long distance services to its customers in India, without a domestic telecom licence.

Though the services were provided between 2004 and 2009 via two local companies, Bharti Airtel (in which SingTel has a 32.3% stake) and Tata Communications, the authorities are only now questioning the legality of the transactions.

SingTel appears to be increasingly caught in the growing political turmoil surrounding the Indian telecommunications industry.

It should be noted that this is not new news as it was first mentioned to investors by SingTel more than a year ago and the company is not the only foreign telco involved in the investigation.

Our update today on SingTel, highlights the growing risks it faces in India, specifically with respect to currency and regulatory risks.

Although we still like SingTel for the overall defensiveness of its earnings and dividends relative to the rest of the market, we prefer StarHub (7% FY12F dividend yield) at this point given the rising risk profile of SingTel in India, which accounts for about 16% of its FY Mar12F pretax profit.

M1 (6.5% FY12F dividend yield) has also underperformed relative to the other two telcos this year.

Not vested. I'm actually quite surprized with this as YTL launced 4G in Malaysia quite a while back ...

======================

SingTel announced on Tuesday the commercial launch of its fourth generation (4G) mobile broadband service, which will be available to both the firm's consumer and business customers.

It provides mobile internet access that is more than three times faster than existing 3G-based services, SingTel said.
