long long ago...in the land where the emperor qin shihuang reigned, common men of the same surname as the emperor had to relinquish their ancestral names as a sign of deference to their emperor...if they didn't, he and his extended family were beheaded...

these commoners lived in fear....if they wanted to speak of their 皇上... they had to bow with every mention of his imperial majesty, as if he was right there... if they didn't, they were beheaded....

so, over time, codes were used in writing and spoken languages, so that the common people could voice their frustrations and communicate freely.... they didnt have to worry about verbally incurring the wrath of the emperor and his goons... bring about calamity to themselves...

and so... the tradition lives on....5000 years later...

StarHub to sell iPhone within 2 months

By WINSTON CHAI

THE iPhone will no longer be a differentiating factor for local telcos as StarHub becomes the last operator in Singapore to take a bite at Apple's coveted handset.

New dynamics: iPhone prices are expected to drop across the board

The touch-screen gizmo that launched a thousand queues globally will go on sale at StarHub shops within two months, after the operator said yesterday that it too has clinched re-seller rights for the device.

This comes after a similar announcement by rival MobileOne last month.

Like M1, StarHub said that it will only reveal pricing closer to the handset's launch date.

These two deals were sealed after almost two years of stop-start negotiations with Apple that harked back to the second half of 2007 following the first iPhone's debut in the United States.

SingTel was eventually given first shot at selling the follow-up model - the iPhone 3G - in Singapore in August 2008. The exclusive arrangement was extended to the latest version - the iPhone 3GS - this July.

Consumers now pay nothing to $678 for an iPhone at SingTel, depending on their subscription plan. However, with two more telcos in the picture, prices are expected to drop across the board to reflect the new market dynamics later this year.

As previously reported by BT, StarHub and M1 continued their talks with Apple despite the SingTel victory, but an agreement could be not reached earlier due to disagreements over thorny issues such as revenue sharing and subsidies.

However, market watchers said that Apple is now more willing to concede middle ground to meet aggressive iPhone sales targets.

SINGAPORE: The Media Development Authority (MDA) has indicated that it will not provide funding for MediaCorp's bid to air key World Cup matches on its free-to-air channels.

Responding to queries MDA said the government's funding for content on free-to-air TV goes towards a large number of public service broadcast (PSB) programmes that promote social objectives and national harmony.

It added it would therefore be difficult to meet requests for funding the World Cup broadcasts which do not meet these objectives.

MDA said the telecast of World Cup 2010 is a commercial decision.

It said it understands the anxiety of football fans and has been monitoring developments closely.

It has also been encouraging telcos SingTel and StarHub as well as media company MediaCorp to continue negotiations with FIFA to telecast the World Cup in Singapore.

It said: "We hope the negotiations will reach a sensible outcome that will benefit all football fans. We also urge fans to be patient to allow the negotiations to take its course."

Is soccer really such a big deal to Singaporeans? I'm never a soccer fan so I can't understand the hoo ha over it.

I wonder if die hard soccer fans will just travel to JB and catch the matches there.
1. Always wait for the setup. NO SETUP; NO TRADE

2. The trend will END but I don't know WHEN.

Results out. Maintaining dividend payout of 5cents and expects to do so for the year ahead, coming from the new CEO Montefiore. This should give more comfort to dividend visibility...
Though, there is no inference that the earnings for the coming FY can exceed 20cents, or any statement to that effect..
