Guess... SMRT 'bullish run' has come to a halt.

Must be all those security breaches etc.

Question.

Is North-East line managed by SMRT or SBS Transit?

I noticed that in AsiaOne's report, the official statement is made by SBS Transit.

If so, we should create move this to a more generic thread, like SG Transport for filing of transport issues.

it's getting tiring just speaking about this... imagine you were among the thousands who had to experience this breakdown yesterday.

lui was there at 915am..to "experience" for himself the inconveniences. he went on to note that the free bus shuttle services were efficient and moved the travelling public along as quickly as they could. he said the operator had a "robust" contingency plan.

no mention and of cos, 4th class world reporters, dared not ask him what he intends to do to prevent this from happening again...

SBS Transit CEO apologises for train service disruption on North-East line
March 16th, 2012

Speaking at a news conference on Thurs (15 Mar) evening, SBS Transit CEO Mr Gan Juay Kiat has apologised to commuters for the inconvenience caused by the North-East line service disruption on the same day.

A power supply problem on the North-East Line caused train service to be disrupted in 5 stations between the Dhoby Ghaut and HarborFront stations starting in the early morning of Thurs (‘60,000 commuters affected by cable fault in MRT NE Line‘).

Train services along the 5 stations were halted from early morning to late afternoon so that engineers can repair 2 snapped power cables.

The snapped cables were discovered at 5am during a regular nightly maintenance, said SBS Transit. One of the connecting cables of the overhead power supply located south of Outram Park station had snapped. SBS Transit then deployed a 25-man engineering team to fix the cables.

Initially, SBS Transit announced that the train service would resume by 2pm. However, it was further delayed till 4:35pm when the full service on North-East line was restored.

But questions remain over why the cables snapped.

SBS Transit said that such an incident had not happened before. The cables were given the ok when inspections were last done on February 20, less than a month ago. SBS Transit said checks are done every three months. SBS Transit promised it would investigate the incident thoroughly.

“This is something that we are still investigating because that two cables are actually stainless steel cables and are supposed to be very strong…we have looked at the steel cables and the condition of the cables was in good condition; there was no corrosion or anything we could identify at the moment,” Mr Wong Wai Keong, executive vice-president of SBS Transit (Rail), said at the news conference.
(their idea of preventive maintenance, on such a critical national transportation system, is to eye ball check for defects. there is clearly no other forms of ensuring things won't break down. the only time they repair is when things HAVE broken down)
“Nevertheless, we also want to find out what exactly caused this failure. We will be doing more detailed investigation on the cause of the failure.”

SBS Transit CEO Gan said the cables will be sent for lab testing to determine the cause of the failure.

SBS Transit said it will conduct a full visual inspection of the system from Outram Park station and Punggol station.

Unlike the outgoing SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa who came from retail background, the SBS Transit CEO Gan Juay Kiat came from a military one:

Mr Gan Juay Kiat was appointed Chief Executive Officer of SBS Transit Ltd on 1 March 2010. Mr Gan first joined ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited as Group Corporate Planning Officer in February 2006. Subsequently, he was also appointed the Chief Executive Officer and Director of ComfortDelGro Bus Pte Ltd. In April 2007, he assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer of SBS Transit Ltd, and was appointed Executive Director on 1 March 2009.

Prior to joining the ComfortDelGro Group, Mr Gan was the Chief Corporate Officer at the Ascott Group and Senior Vice President (Corporate Planning) at CapitaLand Limited.

Mr Gan started his career in the Singapore Armed Forces where he held several senior command and staff appointments. He moved on to join General Electric Company as a Divisional Director, and later to Times Publishing Limited as Senior Vice President (Retail & Distribution).

Mr Gan was a President’s Scholar and an SAF (UK) Scholar in 1976. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Engineering Tripos) from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

They need to acknowledge that maintaining a train system/infrastructure is very different from maintaining a car/taxi/bus.

16% higher starting pay for Singaporean SBS bus drivers

SINGAPORE - In a bid to attract more Singaporeans to be bus drivers, SBS Transit has announced an increase in the starting pay for its Singaporean bus drivers, with effect from next month.

Responding to media queries yesterday, SBS Transit said new Singaporean bus drivers can now expect a basic salary of S$1,600, a 16-per-cent increase over the current S$1,375.

With overtime and allowances, drivers can earn about S$2,250 a month in gross salary in their first year of service, the operator said. Salaries of existing bus drivers will also be adjusted upwards.

Power fault on NEL line causes peak hour morning delay

A power fault on the North-East Line (NEL) resulted in delays of up to 45 minutes for commuters on their way to work early on Friday morning.

SBS Transit, which operates the S$4.6 billion dollar NEL line, sent two separate SMS alerts in the morning to inform commuters of potential delays and apologising for the inconvenience caused.
