Singapore Hot Stocks- Anwell jumps on S$10 million injection

SINGAPORE, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Shares of solar equipment-maker Anwell Technologies leapt 12.5 percent on Wednesday after it announced that a group of Singaporean investors had pumped S$10 million ($7 million) in its solar business.

At 0600, the stock was trading at S$0.045 with 1 million shares changing hands.

The group said it would issue 3-year interest bearing redeemable notes to these investors. Anwell did not name the investors.

Singapore, 6 September 2008 - Anwell Technologies Limited (“Anwell” or “the Group”), a leading global supplier of advanced manufacturing equipment and process technologies for the optical media, OLED and solar industries, has announced that the Group has teamed up with the Chinese Government for a research and development project (“Project”) to encourage breakthroughs in core technology and innovation in technical standards in the Flat Panel Display (FPD) industry of China.

With an aim to provide a platform for the development of related technologies that will enable China to compete effectively on the international stage, the Government of Guangdong Province has agreed to sponsor Anwell with an aggregate amount of RMB150 million. The amount will be disbursed by phases according to the progress of the Project.

Oh well, accouting treatment allows them to recognize the Govt grants as revenues.

Nothing wrong with the accouting treatment here, but one must ask if this is a one-off grant or a recurring one; and whether they have utilized it fully yet?

agree that the grants can be absorbed as revenue that eventually positively affect the profit margin.... but this is only substantial only if the grant amount is very large vis-a-vis their normal income generation... but in reality, we should discount such grants as it doesn't arise from normal course of business... to evaluate the company's bottom line that includes such grants will be misguided...
