What should we resolve today and why? What's the important goal to achieve in our life?

Transform your heart by making it pure and sacred. Purity is the true characteristic of a human being.

This purity should be manifested in everything you do: in your thoughts, in what you see or say, and in all that you do.

It is only when you display such purity that you can become embodiments of the Divine Self (Atma).

Then, the distinction between the Divine and the mundane disappears. Everything is Divinised. The difference between the object and the subject will also go. Everything then becomes the whole.

Resolve today to lead an exemplary life, to turn your thoughts to the Divine, to strive for the purification of your heart and to seek Self-realisation in this very birth!

- Divine Discourse, Jul 13, 1984.

All that you do with purity of heart will find fulfilment.

No part of the mind is unconditioned

Your mind is conditioned right through; there is no part of you which is unconditioned.

That is a fact, whether you like it or not.

You may say is a part of you—the watcher, the super-soul, the Atma—which is not conditioned; but because you think about it, it is within the field of thought, therefore it is conditioned.

You can invent lots of theories about it, but the fact is that your mind is conditioned right through, the conscious as well as the unconscious, and any effort it makes to free itself is also conditioned.

So what is the mind to do? Or rather, what is the state of the mind when it knows that it is conditioned and realizes that any effort it makes to uncondition itself, is still conditioned?

Now, when you say, “I know I am conditioned,” do you really know it, or is that merely a verbal statement?

Do you know it with the same potency with which you see a cobra? When you see a snake and know it to be a cobra, there is immediate, unpremeditated action; and when you say, “I know I am conditioned,” has it the same vital significance as your perception of the cobra?

Or is it merely a superficial acknowledgment of the fact, and not the realization of the fact?

When I realize the fact that I am conditioned, there is immediate action. I don’t have to make an effort to uncondition myself. The very fact that I am conditioned, and the realization of that fact, brings an immediate clarification.

The difficulty lies in not realizing it in the sense of understanding all its implications, seeing that all thought, however subtle, however cunning, however sophisticated or philosophical, is conditioned.

What is the basic moral prescription to be near and dear to Him, today and everyday?

Contentment fills the heart with divine delight. It marks a stage of detachment from the world, for the world makes one swing from pain to pleasure and back again.

Desist from attempts to earn joy or avoid grief and be unconcerned with ups and downs.

Success should not boost your ego, nor should defeat land you in dejection.

Honours should not turn your head, nor dishonour make it droop.

Equanimity and Serenity are the signs of Contentment. The devotee must welcome gratefully whatever happens as ordained by the Divine Will, to which one has surrendered.

Devotees must be free from anxiety and fear, pride and envy. Four enemies intent on ruining you are anger, envy, hatred and horde of desires.

Regard both high and low as roles in the Divine play.

The basic moral prescription for every devotee who aspires to be near and dear, is to worship the Divine and offer Love to Him in every living being.

- Divine Discourse, Aug 02, 1986.

Learn to treat prosperity and adversity with equanimity.

How can there be real love?

The image you have about a person, the image you have about your politicians, the prime minister, your god, your wife, your children—that image is being looked at.

And that image has been created through your relationship, or through your fears, or through your hopes.

The sexual and other pleasures you have had with your wife, your husband, the anger, the flattery, the comfort, and all the things that your family life brings—a deadly life it is—have created an image about your wife or husband.

With that image you look. Similarly, your wife or husband has an image about you.

So the relationship between you and your wife or husband, between you and the politician is really the relationship between these two images. Right?

That is a fact. How can two images which are the result of thought, of pleasure and so on, have any affection or love?

So the relationship between two individuals, very close together or very far, is a relationship of images, symbols, memories. And in that, how can there be real love?

What is the relationship between the ‘Formless Divine’ and the ‘Loving Divine’?

In order to make a child understand that the word 'chair' represents a piece of furniture, you have to draw the picture of a chair and write the letters underneath.

When once the child has learnt to identify the kshara (the temporary form, the chair) with the Akshara (the formless eternal — word), the picture is eliminated; the word remains.

The word, hence forward, represents the thing, the concrete material visible thing.

If no chair existed, the word chair could not have emerged. The word "Divine" emerged to indicate an entity that was experienced.

A 'nothing', 'non-existing being' needs no name. The name is evidence of the thing.

The word "Divine" is evidence of the Divine Phenomenon.

From the Form to the Formless, from the Formless to the Form both processes are possible and progressive.

Your Personal Divine is an expression, a symbol, a representation of the Impersonal Divine.

The Impersonal does personate and assume a form and attributes. This is the very Nature of the Divine.

- Divine Discourse, Aug 02, 1986.

The Divine comes in human form, to facilitate people have the proximity of the Divine,
so that He can transform them and give happiness.

What are the three debts everyone must clear?

Everyone, irrespective of country, race or time period of birth, are born into the world burdened with three debts.

A debt is an obligation arising out of what you received earlier.

First debt is owed to the Divine. Second is to the Sages. Third is to one's parents.

We can easily identify these debts in the human body as different divine forces nourishing and protecting it.

Divine energy permeates your entire body, it is called Rasa (Divine Essence). We owe a debt of gratitude to the Divine who not only endowed us with this precious human body but is also sustaining it.

We can fully enjoy these gifts of the Divine only when we discharge our debts to Him. How? By doing righteous deeds, rendering service to other beings saturated with the same Divine, and consecrating our actions to serve society.

Discharge your debts to the Divine now, or perhaps in many future lives. Earlier we repay this debt, the sooner you realise Divinity.

- Divine Discourse, Oct 10, 1983.

Service broadens your vision, widens your awareness and deepens your compassion.

What is the best way to spend every second of this precious human life?

Every second is a new moment in your life. Utilise it to purify your heart and fill it with love. You will then realise that Divine is yours and you are filled with divine love.

True devotion is the only method to realise the Divine. Devotion means love of the Divine without any desire for reward.

Such devotion can be developed only through good conduct. There can be no devotion without righteousness.

Purity of mind is an essential for enjoying Divine Bliss just as purity of body is essential for bodily health.

Higher than all the knowledge that can be acquired in the world is the Atma jnana (knowledge of the Self). There is nothing equal to the bliss that comes from Self-realisation.

It is attained only when the ego-sense is destroyed and there is prayerful submission to the Divine.

Prayers, again, are used for seeking fulfilment of material desires. Out of the millions who offer prayers, very few seek the Divine with pure hearts.

- Divine Discourse, Dec 31, 1983.

Silence is the speech of the spiritual seeker.

After years of being on the spiritual path, we find some undesirable traits in us or others. Why so? And what should be done?

Inherited evil traits rooted in the mind must be given up. Of these traits, the worst are hatred and envy.

They arise from intense selfishness. They are qualities of the leopard and should not find place in a human being.

Some people try to pretend that they overcame anger, hatred, jealousy and pride. These traits make their appearance from time to time.

You must cast them off immediately. You must perform continuous internal yajna (ritual sacrifice), as against external yajna performed annually.

The internal yajna must be performed at all times, in all places and under all circumstances. The sacrificial altar for this yajna is within each one of us.

Whenever an evil thought or desire occurs, scotch it out mercilessly. Only by constant vigilance and continuous endeavour can we earn Divine grace.

Only when evil traits are banished will Divinity manifest itself in all its glory. This is the real purpose of yajnas - to enable you to achieve purity to realise Divinity.

- Divine Discourse, Oct 10, 1983.

The spiritual path is the path of detachment, of sense control, and of rigorous mind training. -

The major cause of violence

The major cause of violence, I think, is that each one of us is inwardly, psychologically, seeking security.

In each one of us the urge for psychological security—that inward sense of being safe—projects the demand, the outward demand, for security. Inwardly each one of us wants to be secure, sure, certain.

That is why we have all these marriage laws; in order that we may possess a woman, or a man, and so be secure in our relationship.

If that relationship is attacked we become violent, which is the psychological demand, the inward demand, to be certain of our relationship to everything.

But there is no such thing as certainty, security, in any relationship. Inwardly, psychologically, we should like to be secure, but there is no such thing as permanent security...

So all these are the contributory causes of the violence that is prevalent, rampaging, throughout the world.

I think anybody who has observed, even if only a little, what is going on in the world, and especially in this unfortunate country, can also, without a great deal of intellectual study, observe and find out in himself those things which, projected outwardly, are the causes of this extraordinary brutality, callousness, indifference, violence.

What is required to win the Divine’s Grace?

People talk about compassion but are concerned only with ‘fashion’.

They mouth the word ‘co-operation’ but indulge only in ‘operation’.

Presently, devotion is becoming a pompous show.

To secure the grace of the Divine, it is not necessary to seek knowledge, wealth, power or position. Purity of mind alone is enough.

Every cell of one's body will be filled with the Divine when He is worshipped with pure and single-minded devotion.

To the self-sacrificing devotee, the Divine will be Omnipresent.

True knowledge comes when one is confronted with an extreme moral crisis.

During such crisis one thinks of the Divine and seeks Divine help. He is ever ready to answer the prayers of true devotees.

- Divine Discourse, Dec 31, 1983.

Desire destroys devotion, anger destroys wisdom, and greed destroys work – hence these bad qualities must be sacrificed.
