How can we be truly close to the Divine and become deserving of His grace?

I have heard discordant voices and whispers that if there's a Divine nearby, why is the water storage dry, during the greater part of the year?

Some of you here might have heard such statements, made by irresponsible persons who have no knowledge of the working of Cosmic Laws. It is really an absurd idea.

Why should the Divine expend his grace especially on this tank? Does proximity grant greater attachment? No!

The entire Universe is His. All places are equally near for Him and, if they turn away from good ways, all are equally far!

Nearness to the Divine can never be measured by miles. Unless the people of this village have deposited amounts in the bank, how can the bank honour the cheques they draw?

Ask yourself earnestly: Have you deposited devotion to the Divine, service to your kind, and faith in your spiritual practice? Then alone can you draw upon the Grace which is won only by such efforts.

- Divine Discourse, Mar 13, 1964.

To win the Divine’s grace and to gain liberation, it is not enough to repeat His name; you must practice the Divine principle.

We are now struggling in the mire of worldly life (samsara), the slithery mud of attachment. How can we escape from it?

When the Divine is revered, the world and all its poisonous fumes recede and you are restored to original health.

Make the name and form of your chosen Divine, dance upon the hood of your heart.

When you are deep in the mire, how can you pull out another who has fallen into it? Do not get caught.

Save yourself only by calling on the Divine, who is free from sense objects and is on the bank. Hold His hand, and He will pull you safe and keep you steady on the hard ground.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 14, 2006.

With every breath, you should inhale good feelings which are like oxygen and exhale bad feelings which are poisonous like carbon dioxide.

What is the quickest and surest way to realize the Divine?

The waters of the river might be dirty but the devotee who sips it with a mantra or a hymn in praise of the Divine on his lips, transmutes it into sanctified water.

The body becomes healthy by exercise and work; the mind becomes healthy by devout contemplation and remembrance of the divine name (namasmarana), and by regular, well-planned discipline, joyfully accepted and carried out.

Non-violence is the rice, dedication is the gram (chickpea flour), expiation are the raisins, and repentance is the jaggery (unrefined cane sugar). Mix all these well with the ghee (clarified butter) of virtue. That is the offering you should make to your chosen deity, not the paltry stuff you make out of articles obtained for a paisa in the shops!

- Divine Discourse, Sep 06, 1963.

Grief or fear can never exist wherever the Divine's name is chanted with love and faith,
since He Himself manifests there!

At times we worry about the lack of impact of our spiritual practices on our mind. Why should we hold on and persist more deeply than giving up?

The Divine never speaks a word without relevance or significance, He never does anything without appropriateness or purpose.

The young little boy went to the forest to do penance and get a boon from the Divine, so that his father might treat him as lovingly as he did his half-brother. But see what happened?

As he progressed in his spiritual practice, that wish was forgotten, and more lofty ones came to occupy its place. Once the Divine enters your mind, He will get rid of all evil in it.

The Divine and desire (kama) can never coexist. The Divine and lust will never go together. Even mundane desires will be transmuted into higher spheres of purity, when one approaches the Divine. Know that nothing against dharma can stand the presence of the Divine.

- Divine Discourse, Sep 06, 1963.

Happiness results not when desires are fulfilled, but when they are controlled.

The screen of belief

You believe in God, and another does not believe in God, so your beliefs separate you from each other.

Belief throughout the world is organized as Hinduism, Buddhism, or Christianity, and so it divides man from man.

We are confused, and we think that through belief we shall clear the confusion; that is, belief is superimposed on the confusion, and we hope that confusion will thereby be cleared away.

But belief is merely an escape from the fact of confusion; it does not help us to face and to understand the fact but to run away from the confusion in which we are.

To understand the confusion, belief is not necessary, and belief only acts as a screen between ourselves and our problems. So, religion, which is organized belief, becomes a means of escape from what is, from the fact of confusion.

The man who believes in God, the man who believes in the hereafter, or who has any other form of belief, is escaping from the fact of what he is.

Do you not know those who believe in God, who do puja, who repeat certain chants and words, and who in their daily life are dominating, cruel, ambitious, cheating, dishonest?

Shall they find God? Are they really seeking God? Is God to be found through repetition of words, through belief? But such people believe in God, they worship God, they go to the temple every day, they do everything to avoid the fact of what they are—and such people you consider respectable because they are yourself.

What should we apply in our daily living and why?

Since Islam means surrender to the Divine, whoever lives in peace and harmony in society, in a spirit of surrender and dedication, really speaking, belongs to Islam.

Islam insists on full coordination between thought, word and deed. Muslim holy men and sages have been emphasising that we must inquire into the validity of the 'I' which feels it is the body and the 'I' which feels it is the mind and reach the conclusion that the real 'I' is the Self yearning for the Omniself, the Divine.

Fasting and prayers during the month of Ramzan are specially designed to awaken and manifest this realisation.

Consider any religion, whatever it may be, you will find that it emphasises on unity, harmony and equal-mindedness. Therefore, all of you must cultivate love, tolerance and compassion and demonstrate these universal principles in all your daily activities, every day.

- Divine Discourse, Jul 12, 1983.

Love is the common denomination for all values. It is the form of the Divine, for the Divine is Love.

Each day, every one of us will undertake ordinary tasks such as brushing our teeth, washing dishes, getting dressed, and walking the dog.

Can we bring a fresh and awake mind to these activities? This is the true challenge of beginner’s mind.

Why do we lack fulfilment and true happiness even while living in comfort and luxury?

When you feed the cow with fermented gruel so that it may yield more milk, the milk emits an unpleasant smell.

When one engrosses oneself too much with the trifles of the world, the conduct and character become unpleasant.

It is indeed tragic to witness the downfall of the child of immortality, struggling in despair and distress.

If only every one examines these: “What are my qualifications? What is my position?” They will realise their downfall.

Will a tiger, however hungry, eat popcorn or groundnuts? Aim at the goal which your lineage entitles you; how can a parrot taste the sweetness of the mango if it pecks at the fruit of the cotton-tree?

Let your effort align keeping up with the dignity. The goal will near you faster than the pace with which you near the goal.

The Divine is as eager to save you as you are eager to be saved; He is full of love and compassion for all who seek.

- Divine Discourse, Sep 7, 1966.

Self-realisation is the goal. Love is the means.

There is no guide to truth

Is God to be found by seeking him out? Can you search after the unknowable?

To find, you must know what you are seeking. If you seek to find, what you find will be a self-projection; it will be what you desire, and the creation of desire is not truth.

To seek truth is to deny it. Truth has no fixed abode; there is no path, no guide to it, and the word is not truth.

Is truth to be found in a particular setting, in a special climate, among certain people? Is it here and not there?

Is that one the guide to truth, and not another? Is there a guide at all?

When truth is sought, what is found can only come out of ignorance, for the search itself is born of ignorance.

You cannot search out reality; you must cease for reality to be.
