A passionate mind is inquiring

Obviously there must be passion and the question is how to revive that passion.

Do not let us misunderstand each other. I mean passion in every sense, not merely sexual passion which is a very small thing.

And most of us are satisfied with that because every other passion has been destroyed—in the office, in the factory, through following a certain job, routine, learning techniques—so there is no passion left; there is no creative sense of urgency and release.

Therefore, sex becomes important to us and there we get lost in petty passion which becomes an enormous problem to the narrow, virtuous mind, or else it soon becomes a habit and dies.

I am using the word passion as a total thing. A passionate man who feels strongly is not satisfied merely with some little job—whether it be the job of a prime minister, or of a cook, or what you will.

A mind that is passionate is inquiring, searching, looking, asking, demanding, not merely trying to find for its discontent some object in which it can fulfill itself and go to sleep.

A passionate mind is groping, seeking, breaking through, not accepting any tradition; it is not a decided mind, not a mind that has arrived but it is a young mind that is ever arriving.

What is the barometer to measure spiritual progress? Why should we pay careful attention to our habits and attitudes?

Cleanse your emotions, passions, impulses, attitudes, and reactions - this is the essence of spiritual discipline from all faiths.

Examine your mind and thoughts; do not seek other’s faults. See only good. Speak ill of none!

If you slip into slander, repent and resolve not to give vent to that habit again. Humiliate none; respect everyone for the good in them.

Their grief at your behaviour will haunt you during your last moments.

Let every act of yours stand as your credentials when you leave the world.

Let no single act be a drag, or a debit. Soak every moment in love for the Divine.

Of what avail is it to spend hours in meditation, and then spread anger and inflict resentment through your words and deeds with friends and family?

The Scripture recommends you to be ever controlled and yoked with the Divine. So be vigilant, be steady, be earnest. The steady person earns wisdom.

- Divine Discourse, Nov 23, 1973.

A pure heart is the essence of all spiritual practices.

Why should we welcome and accept pain and suffering as part and parcel of our daily living?

Cold and heat are both in the plan of the Divined! Accept this and treat both as valuable.

Trials and tribulations are effective instruments in His toolbox to purify you.

A prayer from a disciple: “Give us always grief, so that we may never forget Thee.”

Suffering and pain are the dietary restrictions that doctor prescribes to supplement the drug of remembrance of the Divine (namasmarana).

Thorny plants and thornless plants, are both present in nature; the wise individual knows the value of both.

He plants the thornless sapling and surrounds it with thorny bushes, so that what he fosters is left unharmed.

Activity can save, as well as kill; it’s like the cat that bites; it bites the kitten to carry it in its mouth to a place of safety but it bites the rat in order to kill and eat.

Become the kitten, and work will rescue you like a loving Mother. Become a rat, and you’ll be lost!

- Divine Discourse, Vijayadasami, 1953.

Education must result in humility. Humility is the best credential for success in life.

Intensity free of all attachment

In the state of passion without a cause, there is intensity free of all attachment; but when passion has a cause, there is attachment and attachment is the beginning of sorrow.

Most of us are attached; we cling to a person, to a country, to a belief, to an idea, and when the object of our attachment is taken away or otherwise loses its significance, we find ourselves empty, insufficient.

This emptiness we try to fill by clinging to something else, which again becomes the object of our passion.

Why should we not insist on everyone adopting our method of spiritual practice or spiritual path?

Every one of you is a pilgrim on that road proceeding at your own pace, according to your qualification and the stage reached through your efforts.

The advice that appeals or applies to one of you might not be appropriate to another, who traveled less distance or reached a more advanced state than your own state!

When I tell one person to follow one line of spiritual discipline (sadhana), it is specifically for that person’s benefit!

Each one of you has different mental, physical and spiritual make-up.

When an individual is obese, the doctor advises certain types of food; when he is thin, he advises another group of foods, isn’t it?

When doctors who treat diseases of the body have to prescribe different remedies, how much more specific and personal must be the remedies for the complex and varied conditions of mental situations and spiritual yearnings and aspirations of individuals across the bridge of time?

- Divine Discourse, Mar 03, 1974.

True devotion lies in accepting both pleasure and pain with equal-mindedness.

Observation without thought

There is no feeling without thought; and behind thought is pleasure; so those things go together: pleasure, the word, the thought, the feeling; they are not separated.

Observation without thought, without feeling, without word is energy.

Energy is dissipated by word, association, thought, pleasure and time; therefore there is no energy to look.

When we do our daily sadhana (spiritual practice), what should be our attitude and outcome?

You must be guarded against pride that infects scholars who mastered a certain number of scriptures.

Do not judge others as inferio, because they do not participate in bhajans (devotional songs) or study circles.

You can be very wrong if you estimate a person's spiritual development by mere externals.

Inner purity cannot express itself through pompous show. Only He who sees into every heart knows who resides therein: (Divinity or selfish desire).

Study sincerely with faith and devotion. Unless you earnestly inquire, you cannot discover the remedy applicable to your temperament and its problems.

Delve into the significance and the meaning of what you read, and always have before you the goal of putting what you read into practice.

The whole Universe is a university for you. You can imbibe wisdom from the sky, clouds, mountains, rivers, the daily phenomena of sunrise and sunset, seasons, birds, trees, flowers, insects and in fact, all beings and things in nature.

- Divine Discourse, Mar 03, 1974.

Nature is the best preacher; Life is the best teacher.

How should we worship the Divine?

The Divine does not need your flower garlands and fruits, things that you buy for a few rupees; they are not genuinely yours.

Give the Divine something that is yours, something that is clean and fragrant with the perfume of virtue and innocence, and washed in the tears of repentance!

Garlands and fruits you bring are an exhibition of your devotion; poorer devotees who cannot afford to bring them feel humiliated and helpless that they cannot demonstrate their devotion like you!

Install the Divine in your heart and offer Him the fruits of your righteous actions and the flowers of your inner most thoughts and feelings.

That is the worship the Divine like most, the devotion the Divine appreciate most.

- Divine Discourse, Vijayadasami, 1953.

There is no nobler quality in the world than love. It is wisdom. It is righteousness. It is wealth. It is Truth.
