How can we overcome worries and troubles?

Life is full of worries. They seem to come in an endless procession, isn’t it?

When you worship the Divine, make sure you repose total faith in Him. Without faith, what is the use of worship? Faith alone will take you beyond worries.

What is it that does not cause anxiety? Birth is a worry, and so is existence itself; family life is a worry, death is a worry, childhood is a worry, old age is the same, living is a worry, working is a worry, pain causes worry, pleasure too causes worry, and so on.

Worry, worry, worry all the time! In this world, troubles will come for sure but you must learn to rise above worry; this is possible only with forbearance.

Welcome troubles with a smile saying, “Come my friend, you are the bearer of joy!” When you are filled with forbearance, you will be blissful and achieve everything in life!

- Divine Discourse, May 25, 2000.

Practise sadhana (spiritual practices) relentlessly to discipline your mind and to develop your moral and mental strength.

Why should we serve those in need in whatever way we can?

You are born in society, you grow in society, and earn name and fame in society.

You learn many skills from the society and develop intelligence, and thereby you gain reputation for being intelligent. You received all these precious gifts from society.

Have anyone of you, young men and women, thought of showing gratitude to the society from which you got the name and fame?

Every human being must possess the quality of gratitude. Being beneficiaries one must show gratitude.

And as an expression of one’s gratitude, one should render selfless service to the society; it is one’s foremost duty.

- Divine Discourse, Jul 16, 1997.

Human birth is gifted to serve others, not just to eat, drink, sleep and make merry.

Why should you practice the attitude of being loving every minute?

Any work done in this world with the attitude of love will be an achievement. The heart in which there is no love is certain to be the paradise of wickedness.

Whatever you do, do it with love. Therefore, start the day with love, spend the day with love, fill the day with love, and end the day with love - this is the way to the Divine.

You read such sacred and inspiring quotes every day, and see them on the boards, but are they getting imprinted in your hearts? Can your hunger be relieved, by just reading the names of many different sweets?

So also, by merely reading sacred quotes or by listening to it will not purify your mind. Practice and experience the results!

- Divine Discourse, Nov 22, 1975.

Love can conquer anything. Selfless, pure and unalloyed love will lead you to the Divine

If we care about being remembered after we die, what should we focus on?

You may belong to any country, be of any age, and any position; it is your character and discipline that is most important.

There is no difference in the code conduct for an Indian, American, German or Russian. All of you are human beings first and belong to the caste of humanity, religion of love and the language of the heart.

When you realise this truth, it does not matter to which country you belong. When you are in the golden age of youth, you should protect your character as your very life.

In ancient times young men and women adhered to the principles of character and hence were highly reputed.

The sapling has to be tended carefully, so that it could grow into a mighty tree in the right manner and serve the people well.

If you want to be remembered, guard your character. From now on if you maintain good character, your progeny, the community you live in and all countries by and large will prosper.

- Divine Discourse, Jul 19, 1997.

Cultivate not riches, not comforts and luxuries, but divine virtues.

How to ensure that the service we partake in, is a spiritual exercise?

People are not aware that time sanctified by service, offers high rewards to themselves as well as to those whom they serve.

All acts of service are not equally sanctifying or uniform in the benefits they confer.

When service is undertaken by power-hungry people, or under compulsion or by imitative urges, it results in more harm than good.

Self-aggrandizement or competition or ostentation are motives that will pollute the sacred Service.

The candidate for this spiritual activity has to avoid egoism, exhibitionism and favouritism.

Before embarking on a service project one must introspect and examine if the heart is full of selfless love, humility and compassion; whether one’s head has the intelligent understanding and knowledge of the problem and its solution; whether the hands are eager to offer the healing touch, and whether one can gladly spare and share time, energy and skill to help others in dire need.

- Divine Discourse, Nov 21, 1986.

Virtue is the salt of life and selfless love is the highest virtue. Develop selfless love and share it.

How to sanctify this precious human life?

Human birth is the noblest of all, the final product of untold ages of your own progressive evolution.

Ask yourself this: Are you consciously striving to live up to this precious gift you’ve won?

From now on, make every living day a continuous offering of Love, like an oil lamp that exhausts itself in illumining the surroundings.

Wear the invisible badge of a volunteer of the Divine at all hours and in all places. Bend the body, mend the senses, and end the mind - that is the process of attaining the status of 'the children of immortality'.

The Divine is the embodiment of sweetness. Attain Him by offering Him the sweetness that He has endowed you with.

Crush the cane in the mill of service, boil it in the cauldron of penitence, decolorise it of all sensual itch, and offer the crystallised sugar of compassionate Love to Him.

- Divine Discourse, Jun 26, 1969.

The tongue must justify itself by sweet soothing words; the hand by soft harmless acts.

How to sanctify this precious human life?

Nowadays, the common accessory in every ladies’ bag and in gents’ pockets is a mirror and a comb. You dread that your charm is endangered when your hair is in slight disarray, or when your face reveals patches of powder; so, you try to correct the impression immediately.

While so concerned about this fast-deteriorating personal charm, how much more concerned should you really be about the dust of envy and hate, and the patches of conceit and malice that desecrate your mind and hearts? Have a mirror and a comb for this purpose too!

Have the mirror of devotion to judge whether they are clean and bright. The comb of wisdom, earned by discrimination straightens problems, resolves knots and enables you to control and channelise your feelings and emotions that are scattered wildly in all directions.

This will save you from conceit and error.

- Divine Discourse, Jun 26, 1969.

Practice spiritual practices relentlessly to discipline your mind and to develop your moral and mental strength.

What is a home? How is it different from a house?

A home must be filled with love, with the sacrifice that love involves, the joy that love radiates, and the peace that love imparts.

Any brick and mortar structure where parents and children spend their lives cannot be a home if children do not yearn for it, and if parents do not find peace therein.

The home is the temple where the family, each member of which is a moving temple, is nurtured and nourished.

The mother is the high priest of this House of the Divine. Humility is the incense with which the house is filled. Reverence is the lamp that is lit, with love as the oil and faith as the wick.

Spend the years of your lives dedicating them for such worship in the homes that you live in.

- Divine Discourse, Jun 26, 1969.

The proper thing for every devotee is to offer worship wholeheartedly in their own homes.

What should we strictly follow and why?

One discipline everyone of you must heed, is the control of the senses; if you give them free rein, they will drag you into calamity.

Education must render you monarch of your talents, which are your tools for acquiring knowledge.

The eye, the ear and the tongue are wild horses. Learn the art of meditation by which the senses can be controlled and the will directed inwards, towards the mastery of feelings and emotions.

You must learn also how to steer clear of hatred, malice, greed, anger, anxiety, pride and other obstacles that come in the way of inner peace.

It is not enough if your home budget is balanced; you must learn the art of having a balanced view of life, which does not get affected by triumphs and troubles, gains or losses, victory or defeat.

This balance can be got only by reliance and faith in the in-dwelling Divine.

- Divine Discourse, Jul 26, 1969.

The proper fulfilment of duties is part of the spiritual discipline necessary for getting enlightenment.

What is the one most important quality a spiritual aspirant must possess?

Dakshinamurthy was walking along a wide seashore alone, immersed in deep meditation.

He saw a dry little twig on the crest of a wave in the distance being passed on from one wave to another, from trough to crest, from crest to trough, until it was cast on the sands on the shore.

He was astounded at the egoism of the Ocean that would not give asylum to even a tiny twig.

Sensing His reaction, the Ocean declared, in words that He could understand, "Mine is neither egoism nor anger; it is only the duty of self-preservation. I should not allow the slightest blot to deface my grandeur. If I allow this twig to mar my splendour, it will be the first step in my downfall."

Then, Dakshinamurthy smiled admiring the vigilance of the mighty Ocean. He pictured the incident as a great lesson in spiritual endeavour.

The slightest twig of desire, if it falls on the mind, has to be immediately lifted out of the pure waters and thrown off. That was the lesson to be learnt.

- Divine Discourse, Jul 29, 1969.

I – want – peace. ‘I’ is ego, ‘want’ is desire. Remove ego and desire and you have peace.
