What is the nature of pure love?

True Love is priceless with no trace of selfishness. It is pure, unsullied and does not change. It is spontaneous, always grows and never diminishes.

The Divine’s Love is of such a nature: spontaneous, free from selfishness, unwavering and always full.

Ordinary human love, motivated by selfish considerations, is liable to change with changes in time and circumstance.

Pure Love wears the mantle of Truth and will not submit to the forces of envy or hatred however powerful they may be. Love prevails over all negativities.

In the pursuit of the good and godly life, you may encounter many difficulties and disturbances. Doubts and questions may also crop up. Only when you face difficulties squarely and bear troubles with patience and fortitude, you will understand Divine Love.

Never allow yourself to be overwhelmed by difficulties and sorrows, doubts and disappointments. Have faith, confidence in yourself and strive to secure His love. The transforming power of pure Love is boundless.

- Divine Discourse, Dec 25, 1984.

To secure pure divine love is the sacred goal of human life.

Why should we be careful with regards to what we consume through our senses?

When the eye sees someone who is regarded as an enemy, there is an upsurge of ill-will in the mind.

On the other hand, when one sees a dear friend the reaction is one of love and affection. As in the case of things seen, what we hear can also have bad or good effects.

The power of words to influence the mind is even more. The Scriptures states "I am Divine", "Thou Art That" and "This Self is Divine", provide inspiration to aim at the highest goal.

They should not be construed or used in any manner to inflate one's ego. Every expression is charged with a power of its own.

When the words are abusive and vulgar, they arouse excitement, anger or depression. But when the words used are sacred, they generate a sanctifying and elevating power.

The joy or distress experienced by the mind is the result of the impressions conveyed by the senses.

- Divine Discourse, Jul 31, 1986.

Culture means giving up one's bad conduct, bad behaviour, bad deeds and cultivating good thinking, and fostering good sentiments that lead to good actions.

How can we surrender to the Divine?

Dedicate all your thoughts and aspirations to the divine and surrender yourselves to the Will of the Divine. Surrender may appear to be difficult, but it is not so.

It is in fact like keeping your money in the bank. You can withdraw money from your bank account whenever you need. Similarly, when you entrust all your concerns to Him, you can draw from Him whatever you need.

What stands in the way of surrender? It is your ego, your possessiveness and lack of sufficient trust in the Divine.

People desperately cling to their possessions saying: "My money, my house, etc.” Sometime or the other your wealth will go. But, once you truly surrender to the Divine, you acquire His grace.

Grace, once earned, will protect you and satisfy all your needs. The Divine does not need your wealth. He is always a "stealer of hearts", not a "stealer of wealth". It is you who must change.

- Divine Discourse, Jul 17, 1988.

The grace of the Divine is better than insurance. It will help you in your times of need without any limits.

How can we sail safe and secure across the sea of worldly life?

You may be in the jungle but your mind may wander in the market. Similarly, you may be in the market, but by spiritual practices, you can secure calmness and peace in your heart in the midst of busiest thoroughfare.

Your mind can build a silent refuge or tie you up into complex knots. It binds; it loosens bonds. You can sail safe on the sea of worldly life, if you have no leaks in the boat; but through the leaks of lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride and envy, the waters of the worldly life will enter the boat and it will sink, drowning you beyond redemption.

Stop all the leaks! Then you need not fear to ride in the sea of worldly life, you can benefit by all the chances it gives for training the senses, by widening your affection, deepening the experiences, and strengthening your detachment.

- Divine Discourse, Mar 28, 1967.

To secure the Divine’s grace, one must adhere to right conduct and observe purity in thought, word and deed.

How can the glory of this land be restored and it’s values be made available to all?

Let the validity of our culture be examined through actual living, and one's own discovery of its values; and communicated to others by those who have experienced the peace and joy derivable from it.

I do not want the extolling of the drug by persons who have not been themselves cured by it. Today, in the very land where this culture grew and flourished, immorality and corruption have destroyed happiness and contentment.

Many condemn these things, but those are the very persons who commit the wrongs they deplore.

In history, you must have noticed that all the great movements and empires were motivated by spiritual undercurrents, not by political or economic stresses.

You must make politics subserve the need to promote and perfect the fundamentals of our culture.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 21, 1967.

You can transform even a wicked person through your love.

To break free from egoism, pride and a sense of achievement, what should we do and why?

Train your mind to dwell on the inner equipment rather than the outer attractions.

Use your mind to cleanse your feelings, impulses, attitudes, tendencies and levels of consciousness.

Let it not accumulate dirt from the outer world and deposit them within itself.

If it is attached to work, the consequences of work get attached to it. Unattached work is the purest; it does not encumber the mind with elation or disappointment.

'I did it', 'This is mine': these are the two fangs that make the individual poisonous.

Pull out the fangs, the snake can be handled and played with as a pet! Every society must be vigilant to see that egoism and the sense of personal possession, pride or achievement, do not invade them. That is the goal to be kept in view.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 21, 1967.

Love is the key to open the doors locked by egoism and greed.

How should we practice true spirituality?

If you attach yourself to a certain Divine and detach yourself from another, you get a plus there and a minus here; the resultant gain is zero.

Do not develop fanaticism or sectarianism in spirituality. Others may have these, but that is no reason why you should meet them with the same failings. Try your best to avoid such infection.

If others require help, go and help them! This will make them realise the loving universal nature of your attitude.

Never encourage differences based on region, language, religion, or any such flimsy grounds. Narrow-minded ideas will undermine the spiritual outlook, the attitude of unity and oneness which is the keynote of the spirit.

Spirituality is a field where inner joy, inner satisfaction, and internal purity are always more important than outer expression!

- Divine Discourse, Apr 21, 1967.

True spirituality consists in promoting human unity through harmonious living and sharing the joy with one and all.

What is the cure for the ailments of desire, doubt, despair and hesitation?

Food is the medicine for the illness of hunger; drink, for the illness of thirst;

To cure affliction of the cycle of birth and death, the Divine is the medicine; for the disease of desire, wisdom is the cure.

For the infection of anxiety, the remedy is spiritual practices.

For the diseases of doubt, despair and hesitation, which is common to all aspirants, the most effective remedy is doing good to others. Service today has become a common word but its value is much depreciated.

Really speaking, only those who are afflicted with equal agony, at the sight of pain and suffering, distress or disease, have the right to serve; for, they are not serving others, they are serving themselves, serving to remove as fast and as intelligently as they can, their own agony.

When you feel that you are serving your own pain, you are curbing your own ego. Otherwise service heightens your self-esteem and develops a sense of superiority, which is harmful spiritually.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 21, 1967.

Service is the highest form of worship and the best penance.

How should we carry out our works and also work with others?

Establish unity among yourselves first; do not seek faults in others or excellences in your own selves.

The Fatherhood of the Divine and the Brotherhood of Man - have full faith in this and fill every act of yours with that reverence and love.

Wherever you are, whatever work you do, do it as an act of worship, an act of dedication, an act for the glory of the Divine who is the Inspirer, the Witness, the Master.

Do not divide your activities as, "These are for my sake" and "These are for the Divine." See all work as one.

When you work, there should be no remainder, nothing pending. Finish all, down to the last. They should not recur again.

If you offer all activities at the feet of the Divine and free them from any trace of egoistic attachment, the consequence will not bind you: you are free, you are liberated, you have liberation.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 21, 1967.

True liberation is giving expression in words to the thoughts which arise in the mind and to practice what one says.

What is the best way to win the Divine, overcoming all and sundry desire?

The chief means to detach your mind from distractions and attach yourselves to the search of the Divine are communion with Him and sacrifice.

Desire has to be got rid of by Sacrifice and the Divine has to be secured by Communion.

Desire discolours the intelligence, perverts judgement, sharpens the appetites of the senses, and leads to a false attraction of the objective world.

When desire disappears or is concentrated on the Divine, intelligence becomes self-luminous, and shines in its pristine splendour.

That splendour reveals the Divine within and in the world outside. That is true realisation of the Self.

If you are not practicing any spiritual practices now, I advise you to take up simple reciting of the divine name, along with reverence towards parents, elders and teachers, and rendering service to the poor and the sick.

- Divine Discourse, May 15, 1969.

To assume that the Divine responds to one Name only and can be adored in one Form only, is a sacrilege.
