Jury Duty Scam

It's a new play on an old ploy -- the jury duty scam.

And people are falling for it all over the country.

I know, when you hear how it works it's easy to say, "I'd never be fooled by anything like that."

But people have -- even a former police officer. So it must sound different when you're on the receiving end of this old trick.

Here's how it works. You get a call from a "deputy" who tells you that there's a warrant being issued for your arrest for failing to appear for jury duty. But...you can pay the fine now and avoid going to jail.

To stay out of the pokey. you need to pay up with a prepaid cash card -- sometimes called a "green dot" card.

And these crooks don't even need the card to get your cash. All they need is the number on the back and poof -- your money is gone with no way to get it back.

One victim described how she got a call from a "lieutenant" from her local police department, saying they were putting a bench warrant out for her husband for "failure to appear for jury duty."

It was late Friday afternoon and the caller said he would wait for her at the courthouse to "cover his bond."

She was suspicious, but still scared her husband would be taken to jail if she didn't pay up.

So she got the card and read the number over the phone. And that was all that was needed to steal her $495.

Officials say that it's very unlikely for a warrant to be issued for missing jury duty. And of course, you would never be told to pay a fine or bond with a cash card number over the phone.

Watch out for this new telemarketing scam by Dr. David Eifrig

If you get a phone call from yourself, don’t answer it…

Recently, one of my coworkers told me he was targeted by scammers. His cellphone started ringing and the caller ID listed his own name and number. He ignored the call, but a short time later, his wife had the same experience.

A call came through with her name and number identified as the caller. She answered the phone to realize the caller was a telemarketer.

This is a new scam that illegal telemarketers are using to get you to pick up the phone. With the advent of caller ID and services like Truecaller that block spam calls, telemarketers have had to look for new ways to get people to answer the phone. According to a scam alert from the Better Business Bureau, sometimes the calls are recordings asking you to verify credit card information.

Do what I do… If you see your own name and number on your caller ID, don’t answer it. I ignore phone calls from numbers I don’t recognize, and often don’t even keep the ringer on, so I’m in control of my time and my life. If the caller has genuinely important information, he’ll leave a message.

HSA warns against two illegal weight loss products BY JANICE HENG

SINGAPORE - The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) is alerting the public about two illegal weight loss products. Two people who took the products suffered hallucinations and acute kidney failure, said a statement on Wednesday morning.

One product, Nutri Drops Grapefruit Diet, was labelled as containing natural ingredients. But HSA's testing found that it contained "potent, undeclared chemical ingredients" such as the weight loss drug sibutramine.

Sibutramine has been banned in Singapore since 2010 due to serious safety concerns about its effects on the heart and circulatory system. Its possible effects include high blood pressure and heart attacks.

The product also contained phenolphthalein, which may cause rashes, abdominal cramps, bone pain, difficulty in breathing and kidney disorders.

Nutrex Research Adipodex, marketed online as a dietary supplement, was labelled as containing yohimbine, a potent medicinal ingredient that is not allowed in supplements sold in Singapore, and is only for use "under strict medical supervision".

The two hospitalisation cases were recently reported to HSA by healthcare professionals. A female teenager had hallucinations after taking Nutri Drops Grapefruit Diet for more than a month, while a man in his 20s suffered acute kidney failure after taking Nutrex Research Adipodex.

Both products were bought online and were touted to help in weight loss. Investigations by HSA are ongoing.

HSA advised those who are now taking the products to stop using them immediately and consult a doctor if they feel unwell. It also exhorted the public to be wary of complementary health products such as supplements and traditional medications "which make exaggerated claims or promise to provide rapid weight loss" and to be cautious when buying products and getting them from reliable local sources rather than online.

HSA said it will take strong enforcement action against those who sell and supply illegal health products containing potent medicinal ingredients. Anyone convicted of selling such products may be fined up to $10,000, jailed for up to two years or both under the Poisons Act. They could also be fined up to $5,000, jailed for up to two years or both under the Medicines Act.

Members of the public with information on the sale and supply of the two illegal products, or any others, can call HSA's Enforcement Branch at 6866-3485 during office hours or e-mail [email protected]. The public can also visit www.healthdangers.sg to learn about the dangers of buying illegal health products from dubious sources

Singapore recalls two Chinese medicines for containing excessive arsenic

SINGAPORE,Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Health Sciences Authority ( HSA) in Singapore on Thursday issued an alert, warning the public not to consume batch T292 of two Chinese medicines -- Zhenzhu Shedan Chuanbeimo and Huatan Zhike Chongcao Zhenzhu Chuanbeimo after they were found to contain excessive levels of arsenic.

HSA also asked retailers to remove the stocks from the shelves. Tientsin Da Chong Trading, the local distributor of the products, is currently conducting a consumer recall of the affected batch and working with HSA to investigate this matter.

The higher than permissible levels of arsenic in these products were detected during HSA's routine product quality surveillance of locally marketed health products, HSA said, adding that no adverse reaction reports associated with the use of these two products have been received so far.

Arsenic is a heavy metal that occurs naturally in the environment and is present in the natural ingredients used to manufacture Chinese Proprietary Medicines, HSA explained. A minute amount of 5 parts per million (ppm) of arsenic is permitted in Chinese Proprietary Medicines. However, laboratory tests detected arsenic levels of 8.16 ppm and 8.48 ppm in Batch number T292 of both products, respectively.

Exposure to excessive amounts of arsenic can potentially cause symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dark colored urine, dehydration, heart related problems, dizziness, confusion, increased heart rate and low blood pressure, HSA said.
