Hoping to bring home the bacon in the Year of the Pig? Avoid the stock market then, says CLSA’s Feng Shui Index

Donald Trump, born in the Year of the Dog, is also destined for a tumultuous 12 months, according to CLSA’s annual index based on Chinese tradition

Kim Jong-un’s sister and Crazy Rich Asians star Michelle Yeoh can look forward to a bright year ahead, the index predicts

If property is more your thing, Hong Kong’s Central district may be in for a prosperous 12 months.

CLSA’s index sees the Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng Index falling sharply in the first quarter, then bouncing back in June. It is likely to slide again in September before recovering in November.

The Year of the Pig will be good for technology, internet and telecom stocks. The education, environment and health care sectors will be fine too, but it will be a bad year for financials and metal-related stocks, a

ndeed, the index has been known to get it spectacularly wrong. Last year, the Year of the Dog, it predicted the stock market would go up in the second half, but the Hang Seng Index actually dropped by more than 14 per cent.

How to stay lucky over Lunar New Year

The numbers two, five, and eight, and the colours yellow, grey, brown, and gold will serve you well this year.

To avoid cursing the new year before it’s begun, do not say negative words, break ceramics or glass, clean, or use sharp objects.

Do not gift people with clocks – the Chinese phrase that means “gifting clocks” is a homophone of paying one’s last respects.

Splitting pears is similarly a homophone for separation.

And importantly, do not cut your noodles at dinner; noodles symbolise the longevity of life, therefore cutting them is akin to cutting your life short – an awful premonition, especially at Lunar New Year.

Sizzling or spam? 3 feng shui masters predict the Year Of The Pig

The lap chun chart for 2019 has an abundance of Water and pockets of Fire elements. Lee interprets this as a sign of opportunities for money, but one must strike while the iron is hot, she adds.

The chart suggests networking and collaboration, and to seize opportunities to gain leverage. But Lee also foresees splits in business ventures and relationships. “Enterprises or relationships that began in 2018 that seemed promising may end in a break-up instead,” she warns.

Good qi (energy) will be in the South and North regions, with more progressive news and events in Southeast Asia, India, Australia, China and Russia.

He warns that negative qi will be in the Southwest and Northeast, while the annual Emperor Star will be in the Northwest and Broken-Emperor Star in the Southeast. This energy will also be in the Western regions (Europe and the US) resulting in more political, economy and financial challenges.

The year will also see more challenges among the leaders of Western countries.

Raymond Lo: The optimistic Fire element will continue to diminish in 2019 and will be taken over by the fearful Water element.

“As there won’t be a return of the Fire year until 2025, we expect a long-lasting bearish market ahead.”

“The yin Earth element is expected to bring prosperity to wood industries and Earth industries (like fashion, media, paper, books, education and environment). The second best industries could be property, mining, insurance and computer software.”

Fire industries including energy, finance and entertainment will fare well. Water industries like shipping, transportation and communication will face stiff competition, however, and may not enjoy a prosperous year.

Metal industries like banking, machinery and cars will also face an unfavourable 2019.

Feng shui tips on how to avoid bad qi in the Year Of The Pig

In the Year Of The Pig, a bad energy called “Five Yellow” arrives in the southwest. It symbolises obstacles and misfortune, so Hong Kong feng shui master Raymond Lo suggests hanging a metal wind chime in the southwest area of your home to dissolve this negativity.

Bad star No. 2, symbolising sickness, arrives in theNortheast. Traditionally, you’d hang a string of six metal coins here to avert misfortune.

But the Grand Duke is in the affected area this year, so it’s unfavourable for construction or excavation work to be done in this direction.

It’s also not advised that you sit with your back against the west, as you’ll be sitting against the unfavourable energy of the “Three Shars” (a.k.a. “Three Killings”).

And for that matter, the southeast is described as the “Crash Position” against the Grand Duke, so it’s not a good place to sit in either.

Lo warns us to watch out for bad star No. 3 – representing conflict and robbery – coming in the south. He suggests putting a piece of red paper in this position to ward off its negative influences.

And then there’s bad star No. 7, representing scandals, in the southeast. Lo’s solution is to place a three-piece bamboo plant in a clear glass vase of water in this area.

“Avoid decorative items in red, yellow or brown, in the northeast and southwest areas, to prevent accumulation of negative qi.”

On the plus side, lucky colours for 2019 include earthy, amber hues of spiced honey. Think creme brulee. Also, positive qi can be found in the north, centre, west, northwest and east.

Hoo recommends spending more time and activities in these areas to trigger all that good energy. This can attract a lot more fortune and noble people or helpers.

“Decorate the centre, northwest, east and south in more spiced honey tones to boost wealth, career, luck, love and health,” he says

In the north, use more bluish-coloured items to accumulate better qi for greater career, wealth and academic results.

Meanwhile, Hoo says that on the first day of Chinese New Year, the God Of Wealth was in the south while the God Of Happiness and of Nobility were in the southeast.

“If you made good wishes or prayed for luck facing these directions from 12am-1am, 1am-3am, 3am-5am, 7am-9am and 11am-1pm, you will resonate with the positive qi effectively,” he predicts.

According to Hoo, making good wishes or praying early in the morning on the first day of the Lunar New Year brings about fortune and good vibes for the whole year.
