What should education do to us and to our perceptions?

Expansion is the keynote of education.

The first step for this expansion is the home, where you must revere and please your parents who gave you this chance to live and learn. If you ill-treat them or inflict grief on their minds, how can you ever gladden others by service and understanding?

You know that when a balloon is blown, it bursts and the air inside it merges with the vast limitless expanse outside. So too your love must fill your home and your society, and finally burst even those bonds and become worldwide.

A drop of water held in the palm evaporates soon; it is very solitary. But drop it into the sea - it survives! It assumes the name, the majesty and the might of a sea! Cultivate the seeds of love in all hearts!

- Divine Discourse, Jul 25, 1975.

Close your eyes to others faults, but keep them open to see your own mistakes.

What should we cultivate to be an ideal student or even an ideal devotee?

Your mind, destiny, position, and wealth are gifts of the Divine. You must use it to develop the qualities of equality, solidarity, integrity, and amity.

But people today have changed their mind into a wicked mind. It is your mind that makes you a good or bad person. Improper use of mind will make you egoistic.

Modern youth and students aspire for wealth, friendship, and high position but not virtues, and indulge in ostentation. Many students waste their time in bad company, bad thoughts, and bad behavior.

Brass and gold, both look alike. But a vessel of brass makes much more noise than one made of gold. Students should not indulge in showmanship and tall talk.

Always talk sweetly and softly, with humility. You cannot always oblige, but you can always speak obligingly.

Always talk lovingly and respectfully, and conduct yourself fittingly as an ideal devotee, an ideal student.

- Divine Discourse Jul 10, 1996.

Good qualities, good practices, and good behaviour are the hallmarks of a student.

What should be the purpose and goal of education ?

Teachers’ day is celebrated on Sep 5 every year in India.

Of all the branches of education, spiritual education is the true education. In comparison, spiritual education is the ocean while the other branches of education are like the rivers. When rivers go and merge in the ocean, they acquire the depth and glory of the unfathomable ocean.

Similarly when all forms of education blend and merge with spiritual education, they acquire the form and grandeur of the ocean of wisdom.

When your education is combined with penance (tapas), then the blossoming of your heart and the ennobling of your ideas will occur naturally.

Penance does not mean that you should give up everything and go to the forest and stand there with your head on the ground.

Penance is one, through which, you can harmonise your thought, word and deed with each other.

When such a sacred type of education is given along with proper culture, great and noble ideas will blossom from within you.

- Summer Roses on Blue Mountains 1976, Ch 11.

Education should not entirely and wholly be related to worldly matters. It should promote your character.

What is the difference between worldly education, expertise in reciting prayers or writing books and gaining spiritual wisdom?

The basis for the entire world is the love of the Divine. Even if one is able to learn by heart, the essence of all the scriptures and is able to compose poetry in a very attractive manner, yet if that person does not have a purified heart, he is a useless person.

What other greater truth can I communicate to you today? The present day’s education is not real education. It appears that the education of today is merely an avocation to enable you to make a living.

While pursuing such a path which enables you to eke out a livelihood, you also promote individual selfishness. The aim of real education should be character development. That kind of education in which there is no sacredness and character is useless.

What is the use of acquiring so many different types of education? You must try to learn that wisdom, through which you can escape death.

- Summer Roses on Blue Mountains 1976, Ch 13.

Have constructive thoughts; consoling words; compassionate acts.

How is it that in spite of the increase in literacy, and more youngsters getting multiple degrees in newer fields of education, there is still discord in the world?

One may have acquired a lot of knowledge and spent one’s entire life in education but what is the use of this if one’s mean qualities have not been shed.

You may spend a lot of time and learn many things but it will only make you argumentative.

By education of such type, you can never acquire complete wisdom.

Today, the entire life of many people is dedicated to simply imitating others. Many students are destroying their own ideas and individuality and are getting addicted to the process of imitating others.

If you desire the security, safety and the wellbeing of your country, then it is essential for you to develop three things! They are: service to the country, sacrifice without being selfish, and devotion to spirituality.

There is a great need to train young people who have a strong determination in this regard.

- Summer Roses on Blue Mountains 1976, Ch 13.

Just as the end of culture is perfection, the end of knowledge is love, and the end of wisdom is freedom.

What should education do to our life?

Education is an ornament for you, it is your secret wealth that confers prosperity and fame. It is one's unfailing kinsman in foreign travel. More than wealth, this secures the respect of rulers.

Education is the basis for leading a purposeful life in the physical world, in the realm of the mind and in society. It equips you with mental strength and steadiness to face the challenges in life and understand the myriad manifestations in Nature.

Only when you understand the power of your mind, you can recognise the relationship between the world and society.

Education should promote discrimination and humility, and enable you to recognise your obligations to your parents and others who have made you who you are today.

Gratitude is a supreme virtue. Be grateful to your parents. Broaden your vision. Be aware of the Divinity that is inherent in every being. Cultivate the spirit of love and fill your life with joy.

- Divine Discourse, Nov 22, 1988.

The end of knowledge is love. The end of education is character.

What is fundamentally wrong with our systems of education today and how is it crippling the true progress of individuals?

The present day education has only a means of livelihood as its aim. It is job-oriented, not truth-oriented, not Divine-oriented.

Life must be lived in love, peace and bliss. Therefore, even while in schools and colleges, boys and girls must know about the ever peaceful, ever blissful, ever loving Eternal Soul (Atma).

The body, the senses, the mind, the reason and intellect are all unreal in the sense of temporary existence.

Raising the standard of living is not as important as raising the level of consciousness. Education today highlights accumulation of things. Indeed, giving up is equally essential.

Renunciation is not a loss; it is highly profitable, because you acquire joy thereby. Renunciation means freedom; it is surrender to the Divine, love and freedom.

The Divine can be realised only through the expansion of Love. Students and youth must lead lives anchored in righteousness and wisdom, and be shining examples of simplicity, humility and mutual service.

- Divine Discourse, Feb 8, 1987.

Offer services and receive love. This is the recipe for experiencing Divinity.
