What understanding should teachers and students have firmly established in their minds so as to bring about harmony in society?

Three qualities distinguish man from other animals. They are sympathy, compassion and renunciation.

Today, a famine has dried up these feelings in the human heart. This tragic condition is generating agitation and disturbance among both students and teachers.

The conviction that money can achieve anything has grown in people’s mind, though it is impossible to promote peace and security through the accumulation of money.

Money can buy plenty of food; it cannot buy appetite or hunger. Money can buy medical care and medicines; but it cannot buy health and immunity. Money can buy servants; it cannot buy goodwill.

It can buy comfort but not happiness. It cannot help to promote character or morality.

This truth must be understood by both students and teachers. For, teachers mould the nation and students build the nation, sound and strong.

- Divine Discourse, Aug 31, 1981.

Believe that the Divine resides in all beings. Speak such words as would spread goodness, truth and beauty.

As parents educating young children, what should we focus on?

Many feel proud about the enormous expansion of education in the country. But is there any reason to be happy about the current situation?

An unhealthy expansion of education is as undesirable as an unhealthy bloating of the body.

Acquiring degrees at great cost and out of intellectual pride, developing contempt for one's parents, is not a sign of proper education.

Humility is the hallmark of true education. Arrogance, envy and ostentation should have no place in a properly educated person.

People crave for peace and happiness but they do things which bring unhappiness and worry.

Having been born as human beings, you should try to rise above the level of animals. You are all essentially sparks from the Divine. But like sparks coming from a furnace after a while turn into ash, you are forgetting your divine origin.

While pursuing your education for worldly purposes, you should also practice spiritual discipline, which will lead you to the Divine.

- Divine Discourse, Mar 1, 1981.

Living virtuously is the mark of an educated person.

On the joyous occasion of the convocation, what is some advice to the students?

Educational institutions, which ought to give a lead in promoting the nation's allround welfare, are leading the country astray.

Human values like sacrifice, integrity, fairness and morality, have almost disappeared. Reverence and respect for elders are totally absent.

What we need today is not a new system of education, a new social order, not even a new religion.

We need noble and high-minded men and women. Only then the nation will be prosperous.

Whatever may be the situation in other universities, our students should behave in an exemplary and ideal manner.

Foster moral, spiritual and social values. Dedicate your lives to the upholding of morality.

Uphold the ideals of education. Cultivate the love of the Divine and inspire in everyone, devotion to the Divine. Live in Him! Make others live in Him!

- Divine Discourse, Nov 22, 1992.

Character is the most precious gift of education.

What is the key aspect of education that every student must imbibe?

Education must be regarded as a sacred process and preparation for unselfish service to society.

There are innumerable people in the world who are suffering from various physical and other disabilities. It is the duty of educated persons to serve them and help to relieve their suffering to the maximum extent possible. This is the best form of service to the Divine.

There is pollution and impurity in the air, water and in many things around us. You must use the knowledge you acquire to purify what is impure.

Service to society must become the primary purpose of education.

Students should devote their knowledge not only to earn a living but to use their talents and energies, in whatever walk of life they may be engaged in, to render service to society in all ways open to them.

- Divine Discourse, Feb 5, 1984.

Reigning in your senses is a mark of growing in wisdom.

Why is women’s education important for a society?

Past, present, or future, women are the backbone of progress and the heart of the nation. In fact they are its very breath. Charged with holiness, they play the chief role in the righteousness of life.

No nation can be built without investing in the culture of its women. The world can be lifted to its pristine greatness only through women mastering the science of realisation of Reality.

If a nation is to have lasting prosperity and peace, women must be trained through an educational system that emphasises moral conduct and moral qualities.

Every woman must be able to understand the problems of the family, society and the countries. She must render such service and help as she can, within the limits of her resources and capacity, to the family, community and the country.

The present downfall in moral standards and absence of social peace is due to the neglect of this aspect of women's education.

- Dharma Vahini, Ch 5.

If you honour your mother, the Mother of the universe will guard you against harm.

How should teachers conduct themselves?

Teachers must adopt the spiritual discipline (sadhana) of purifying their emotions in order to earn the status and authority of gurus.

A true guru must guide their students to lead a worthy and happy life. And true students must respond with eagerness and adoration.

Teachers are responsible for the nature and quality of the activities and character of their students. They have the opportunity to impress the youth through their scholarship and leadership. So they must keep clear of selfish aggrandisement and political manoeuvering and have only spiritual enlightenment as their ideal in life.

The members of the teaching staff must move amongst themselves as brothers and sisters.

Students will become aware of differences and rivalries between their teachers. Of course, differences are inevitable and may even be useful. But differences shouldn’t pollute mutual relations, hinder the progress of the institution, and adversely affect the processes of teaching and learning.

Teachers must consult each other and cooperate with each other.

- Chap 19, Vidya Vahini.

Teachers are reservoirs from which, through the process of education, the students draw the water of life.

What is the barometer for a good student and a good teacher?

Teachers should reveal the direction and the goal.

Students lay the road and journey into the future.

The skill and strength, status and stature of mankind are shaped and furthered in proportion to the quality and character of its teachers.

Character is the hallmark of humanity. Teachers must dedicate their learning and wisdom to the great task of uplifting pupils to higher levels of knowledge and action.

The virtues they help inculcate in their pupils are essential for the uplift of society.

Every student must endeavour to unfold the divine present within and equip oneself for serving society with skill and knowledge.

When virtues are rooted in the heart, every being shines in full glory.

A life without good character is a shrine without light, a coin that is counterfeit, and a kite with a broken string.

- Ch 18, Vidya Vahini.

The first task of teachers is the cultivation of virtue in the hearts of pupils.

What is the real core of spiritual education?

Spiritual learning impels one to pour one’s narrow ego, into the sacrificial fire and foster in its place, universal love, which is the foundational base for the super structure of spiritual victory.

Love that knows no limits purifies and sanctifies the mind. Let the thoughts centre around the Divine, let the feelings and emotions be holy, and let activities be the expression of selfless service. Let the mind, heart, and hand, be thus saturated in good.

Spiritual education has to take up this task of sublimation. It must first instill the secret of service.

Service rendered to another has to confer full joy in all ways. Spiritual education must emphasise this through service (seva); no harm, pain, or grief should be inflicted on another.

While rendering service, the attitude of its being done for one’s own satisfaction should not tarnish it. Service must be rendered as an essential part of the process of living itself.

- Ch 8, Vidya Vahini.

The end of education is character.

What should be the fruit of genuine higher education?

The lotus leaf is born underwater and it floats on water but it does not get wet. Likewise, you must be in the world — in it, by it, for it, but not of it.

The special feature of higher education is to prepare you for this role. That is to say, you must live thus on earth with your heart immersed in the Divine and your hands busy in work.

Love should not degenerate into an article of commerce. Love fulfils itself in love. According to the point of view of great people and of the spiritual teachers, one advances not from falsehood to truth but from the partly true to the fully true.

Each individual Inner-Self (Atma) can be called a garuda bird, which soars higher and higher and, gathering supernatural strength, at last reaches the solar orb with unlimited splendour and majesty.

- Vidya Vahini, Ch 13.

Practice the vocabulary of love – unlearn the language of hate and contempt.

What is the mark of a really educated person? What is the barometer or a wise individual?

You may master a billion fields of study, but if you have not cultivated the attitude of detachment, that mastery is of no consequence.

Sharing with others and serving others selflessly with love, is the main rule of spiritual knowledge - that is its genuine expression.

Just as trees don’t eat their fruits but offer them to be eaten by others, in an attitude of detachment; just as rivers, without drinking the waters they carry, quench the thirst and cool the heat from which others suffer; just as cows offer their milk, produced primarily for their calves, to be shared by others, in a spirit of generosity born of renunciation so too, those who have acquired spiritual knowledge, should offer it to others prompted by the motive of service and without consideration of selfish interests.

Only thus can anyone justify their status as noble.

- Vidya Vahini, Ch 15.

Offer services and receive love. This is the recipe for experiencing Divinity.
