Punch Gunalan passes away By RAJES PAUL

PETALING JAYA: Badminton legend Datuk Punch Gunalan passed away peacefully at 6am Wednesday. He was 68.

Gunalan had been battling with liver cancer for some time.

He had put Malaysia in the world's map in the 1970s with his immaculate performances in both the singles and doubles events as a distinguished player - representing the country in the Thomas Cup, All-England and Asian Games.

BADMINTON: Punch's 1976 babes By K.M. BOOPATHY

THEY were a bunch of no-hopers but Datuk Punch Gunalan's Thomas Cup babes, the 1976 Malaysian squad, remain one of the biggest surprises in the history of the prestigious men's team tournament.

Datuk James Selvaraj was among the Thomas Cup team who beat Denmark to reach the 1976 final.

The reason was that they lived up to Gunalan's motto: "A match is not lost until the 15th point is scored."

James Selvaraj, Phua Ah Hua, Saw Swee Leong, Moo Foot Lian, Dominic Soong and Cheah Hong Chong were the squad assembled by the BA of Malaysia (BAM) after the 1972 squad, who failed to get past the regional competition, was disbanded.

Astro announced later that all Malaysians, even non-Astro subscribers, could watch Sunday’s final for free via the Astro on the Go (AOTG).

“To access AOTG you can download the app from the Apple App store and Google Play store or access it via web on onthego.astro.com.my,” said Head of Sports at Astro CK Lee on Saturday.
