Green Thumb by Patty Yosey

Keeping up an active hobby such as gardening when older, may be one way to keep your mind young.

Studies show that older people that regularly indulged in gardening, have a lower risk of dementia, compared to non-active older people.

100-year-old Frenchman aims to be fastest 100km cyclist

A French centenarian was set to climb on his bike on Friday and try to set a record for the fastest 100-year-old to cycle 100 kilometres (62 miles).

Robert Marchand, an amateur cyclist who claims to have clocked tens of thousands of kilometres in the saddle, will make the attempt in a stadium in the city of Lyon.

"The stadium track is 333 metres long. I'll have to do 300 circuits on a cement track in the open air. The most important thing is not to fall," he said in his apartment in Mitry-Mory near Paris.

Marchand, who has lived in Canada and Venezuela and whose professional life has included stints as a market gardener, show salesman and wine dealer, said he only took to cycling when he bought his first bike in 1978.

His bid for the centenarian record will be certified by the French national cycling federation.

Drugs for Seniors

You wouldn't think this would require a study. Seems to me, it's common sense.

But nonetheless, new research actually proves that seniors are significantly more likely to fall when they use psychiatric drugs. These drugs include antidepressants, antipsychotics, and sleep aids.

Now, it's probably true that everyone is more likely to fall when they're drugged up. But the danger for seniors is much more serious -- even deadly.

It's no surprise (and doesn't require a multi-year study) that when seniors fall, they are more likely to break a hip or an arm. Or even to hit their heads.

And the vicious cycle kicks in from there. Before you know it, you're incapacitated, your strength wanes, and your quality of life plummets.

All too often this kicks off a cascading effect that leads to permanent long-term care, a series of illnesses and, far too often, death.

Make sure that you or other seniors in your life are not taking these drugs unless they are absolutely critical. The risk from a fall can be far greater than what the drug was supposed to treat in the first place.

This is one of the biggest dangers of aging. Here's a simple way to reduce your risk

by Dr. David Eifrig

Get moving and prevent hip fractures...

According to researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital, men who walked at least four hours per week were 43% less likely to have a hip fracture than men who walked less than an hour. The brisker the pace, the more hip-fracture risk is reduced.

Is a "purpose-driven life" apt to be a longer one as well?

That's what two professors have concluded after reviewing data from a 14-year-old study.

The study of 6,000 people was funded by the National Institute on Aging. Subjects were asked such questions as whether or not they felt like aimless wanderers through life.

Those who thought their lives had purpose and direction were shown to have a 15 percent higher likelihood of survival than those who didn't.

The study also found that having goals in life was more important to longevity than age, gender and feelings of emotional well-being.

The professor who led the study pointed out that a sense of purpose can mean different things to different people. It might mean simply making your family happy. Or it might involve doing something creative that is "appreciated by others."

How a sense of purpose might help lengthen life is a mystery. One theory is that it offers protection against the effects of stress.

Or perhaps it's just the idea of having "something to live for" that does it.
