Be Careful of Charity Scams

A friend's 80-year-old dad had thousands of dollars siphoned from his bank account after "donating" to a Police Benevolent Association's charity that called him at home a few weeks ago.

They requested personal information and bank account data promising to have their solicitation mailed to him. Of course, nothing arrived in the mail.

When people respond to a donation request from a charity, they believe they're helping to improve the lives of those in need, not helping to pad the wallet of a scam artist.

It may sound obvious, but everyone needs to perform proper due diligence on all charitable groups before making any donations to make sure they are legitimate.

"Don't stop giving after Christmas is over.

Commit to sharing a gift to the world each day.

Call someone. Send a text of encouragement or a handwritten thank-you card.

Donate to a cause you care about. Share your abundance. Give away what you have and it will come back to you many fold.

You cannot out-give the universe."

Fake volunteers went around Bugis Junction asking for donations using Singapore Heart Foundation stickers

Charity organization Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF) has since filed a police report on Sunday regarding a group of “volunteers” who’ve been campaigning for donations at Bugis Junction on Feb 19, and presumably pocketed the funds for themselves.

To make themselves seem legit, SHF’s Flag Day stickers were used, invoking the name of the organisation in the (fake) efforts to “help students and ex-convicts.”

SHF Chief Executive Officer Vernon Kang stated that the SHF “has not commissioned any volunteers to carry out fund raising activities at the said date/venue”.

He also clarified that actual representatives of the SHF will always have on them ID badges — displaying the name of each individual fundraiser — and a copy of the Collectors Certificate of Authority (CCA), issued by the National Council of Social Service.

Thus, if any member of the public wishes to verify the authenticity of said individual volunteer, they should just request the volunteer’s full name or ID badge number.

Closing his statement, Kang assured the public that the SHF “does not condone such activities”.

A netizen pointed out that the fake volunteers can sometimes be seen canvassing for donations at JEM and the vicinity of Raffles Place MRT.

How do you define ‘Service’?

You consider helping people in difficulties, is service. No. It is not as simple as that. Your body should be constantly engaged in serving others.

The human body consists of several limbs. All these limbs are meant to be engaged in serving your fellowmen and not for other activities. Unfortunately, we are forgetting this basic fact.

Every limb in the body has been granted by the Divine for worshipping Him through service. It's the only means by which the human life can be sanctified.

We are building several temples. We are undertaking various spiritual practices. But all these spiritual activities
can give us only temporary satisfaction, not eternal joy.

Our ancient sages have been able to achieve eternal joy through a conscious effort. Therefore, you must develop firm faith in the truth that nothing can provide eternal joy, except service to humanity.

Undertake service to the suffering humanity. Service is not merely confined to health services. Service encompasses every possible help to fellow human beings.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 1, 2004.

Learn to adapt, adjust and accommodate. Learn to give, not to take, and learn to serve, not to rule.

How should we serve to draw the complete benefit from the acts of service performed?

You must always serve, remembering that you are serving the Divine.

Be content to describe yourself as a humble and devoted servant of the Divine.

Bear in mind the maxim, “Without being ready to carry out the Divine's command, you cannot become "The Divine".

Transform your life through service, without giving any room for arrogance or self-interest.

Firmly install in your heart the feeling that wherever and whenever you serve, you serve the Divine alone. Only then, serving fellow-beings becomes equal to serving the Divine!

Why should we serve? And where should service and duty begin?

Born in society, brought up in society, educated by society and deriving countless benefits from society, what are you doing for society?

Social service should be regarded as an expression of gratitude to society for what it has done for us. Without society we cannot survive.

The Divine-given body should be employed for practising Dharma (prescribed duties).

Women should treat even their daily chores as a form of concentrated work. If they are unable to attend a spiritual gathering on account of household duties, they should not feel miserable.

Discharge of duties at home is as sacred as attending a spiritual gathering. Only if you do your duties at home properly will you be able to render proper service outside.

In whatever work you do at home, whether sweeping the floor or making food, convert it into a form of spiritual exercise. Infuse every action with love of the Divine and dedicate it to Him.

- Divine Discourse, Mar 23, 1989.

The best way to love the Divine is to love all, serve all.
