Utopia

I will be using this thread to crystalize my thoughts on what I think my Utopia will be. Hopefully, some of the future leaders of the world. will stumbled onto this thread and will use some of the ideas here to make the world a better place :P

==========================================

Let's start with the definition of Utopia:-

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Utopia is a name for an ideal community or society, that is taken from Of the Best State of a Republic, and of the New Island Utopia, a book written in 1516 by Sir Thomas More describing a fictional island in the Atlantic Ocean, possessing a seemingly perfect socio-politico-legal system.

The term has been used to describe both intentional communities that attempted to create an ideal society, and fictional societies portrayed in literature. "Utopia" is sometimes used pejoratively, in reference to an unrealistic ideal that is impossible to achieve. It has spawned other concepts, most prominently dystopia.

The word comes from the Greek: οὐ, "not", and τόπος, "place", indicating that More was utilizing the concept as allegory and did not consider such an ideal place to be realistically possible. The homophone Eutopia, derived from the Greek εὖ, "good" or "well", and τόπος, "place", signifies a double meaning that was almost certainly intended. Despite this, most modern usage of the term "Utopia" assumes the latter meaning, that of a place of perfection rather than nonexistence.

Let's start with having the basics for all of it's inhabitants:-
1) Food
2) Water
3) Sanitation
4) Shelter
5) Clothing
6) Security ie. Safe Place
7) Education
8) Medical Care

and other perceived necessities of modern life eg. Electricity, Telecommunication, Internet, Cable TV etc

After the basics have been met, the inhabitants would naturally now want to pursue their interest/passion.

An artist would want to paint, a musician would want to play his instruments, a scientist would want to research, a historian would want to study, a home-maker would want to look after her children etc..

Therefore, the environment in this Utopia should be conducive for the inhabitants to pursue their interest/passion, whatever that interest/passion is.

To ensure that things are running efficiently and properly in Utopia, there should also be good "Administrators" in Utopia. These administrators ensure that there's electricity, water, sanitation etc.

Questions:-
1) How do the inhabitants ensure that they have good Administrators ?
2) How do the inhabitants ensure that the Administrators are spending the money wisely ?

My random thoughts:-
1) You will need to pay fair money for the Administrators. There should be job descriptions and KPI. for all of these Administrators. Their compensation should also be bench-marked against their peers in their industry.
2) To ensure that the money are being spent wisely, there should also be regular independent audits and the results published.
3) There should also be an independent department to receive and investigate complaints against those Administrators. All complaints and investigation must be published.
4) Transparency is very important

Transparency is something that has improved with TV, Newspapers, Magazines and the Internet. The main spirit of transparency is to ensure that an honest and unbiased report is presented. Thereafter, the people would be able to make a judgement on the situation.

My random thoughts:-
1) If someone has made a mistake, he should take responsibility for the mistake. Thereafter, he should learn from the mistake. And then move on ..
2) Trying to cover up mistakes leads to more mistakes and so on
3) We are all human beings so we do make mistakes once in a while. However, if we make the same mistake again, that means that we have not learnt from our earlier mistakes

The decisions in Utopia are made by a group of "Representatives". These "Representatives" are not
"Administrators". They dont administer.
They only decide on matters that are of National Interest.

All discussions of the Representatives are recorded and published, so that the public in Utopia, can follow their discussion.

So what is your vision of your Utopia ?

Ha Ha ... please do feel free to provide your input now. The basics have been laid out for Utopia already...

Also, I realized that's not necessary to reinvent the wheel. Many of the stuff for Utopia is already being practised in various parts of the world now. All we got to do is tweak it a bit to bring it to the next level ...

One of the important issues nowadays, is "Check & Balances".

In my Utopia, there will always be "Check & Balances". No one individual will be able to make a decision, that will have huge consequences for the entire population of Utopia.

If a major decision has to be made, it should ideally be made through a referendum. If a referendum is not possible, then that decision could be made by all of the Representatives. And if that is not possible, then the decision should be made by a "Supreme Committee" of at least 7 people, all of whom have equal voting rights.

In addition, none of the 7 people, will have any existing interests with each other. This is to preserve the independence of their decisions.

As Transparency is very important in Utopia, all deliberations by this "Supreme Committee" of 7 people, will always be recorded and published for all to see.

There's also an "Independent Complaints Committee" that the people can approach, to voice any complaints against any Administrator, Representative or Supreme Committee member. Again, any complaint and investigation, will have to be recorded and published.

There will also be an "Independent Audit Committee" that will audit this "Independent Complaints Committee", to ensure that they are doing their job properly. The findings of this "Independent Audit Committee" will also be recorded and published.
