Singapore expected to exit Formula One after 2017 season

Singapore is expected to bid farewell to Formula One after the 2017 season, says Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

The republic’s contract with Formula One ends in 2017 and Ecclestone believes that it will not be extended.

Ecclestone in an interview with German motorsports magazine Auto Motor Und Sport said: “Look at what we have done for Singapore. Yes, the Grand Prix has cost Singapore a lot of money, but we’ve also given them a lot of money,” said Ecclestone.

“Singapore was suddenly more than just an airport to fly to or from somewhere. “Now they believe they have reached their goal and they do not want a grand prix anymore,” said Ecclestone in the interview, which also appeared online via motorsport.com.

Singapore suffered a 15 per cent decrease in ticket sales for the 2016 Singapore GP. Ecclestone also believes a number of manufacturers, including Mercedes and Ferrari, could quit the race as well.

“It could happen to us that Mercedes and Ferrari run away. But honestly, if the races get better, this may not be such a terrible vision."

Citing Honda, BMW and Toyota as examples, Eccelstone said Formula One must expect some manufacturers to leave the sport.

“They go when Formula One has done the job for them. There is no gratitude,” he said.

Malaysia is also considering taking a temporary break from the sport following a drop in Formula One ticket sales at the Sepang racing circuit.
