Ladies on here please correct me - I'm under the impression that Coach is actually getting very popular amongst the ladies because it's cheaper yet just as classy (or close). I know nuts about handbags, but I know that when my wife and her colleagues went on business trips to the US in the past, bringing back Coach bags in lorry loads for other friends seems to be a key activity. Especially earlier this year, when the US$ was super-weak.
Am I right to say this?

Coach and LV target different market segment.
I just saw in the papers a couple of days back (either Today or whatever the other free newspaper is)....
Top 10 luxury brands listing LV as the first and Rolex as second. Among the Top 10, there are Coach, Hermes, Prada etc (in no particular order). I can only remember the first 2.
But, using Singaporeans as a market will not be a good proxy to the luxury market.
Think of the folks from China, Indonesia and Japan (very strong yen!!).

finally, my wife's mysterious behanviour is solved.....coach bags...yes... they (meaning wife and her female colleagues)...macam have coach bag parties (they use to have tupperware parties)...these bags from US becos, CHEAPER...and not just becos of the recent strength in SGD....they are just generally cheaper...
by how much? i duno....and i asked the wife...cheaper by how much...the answer is
"it is just cheaper"
so, i;ve learned....to women....cheaper means lesser in absolute price value...even if it is $1 cheaper..."it is just cheaper"...
but ok lah.... women's birthright to shop....

It can be A LOT cheaper, from what I know, depending on whether it's a new item or not (cheaper if it isn't). I think can be as cheap as half price (or more?). You know lah, US has this coupon system, you print print, bring to their shop, use the coupon, discount, etc. They're doing good business from overseas Singaporean customers. I once remarked to my wife that "wah, so good can bring back a few and sell" and my impression I get from her is that if you really did that, there wasn't any fear that they'd be left unsold. Scary.

My wife bot a few coach bags for her friends when we were living in the US back in 2006.
Coach is considered affordable luxury. They bridged the gap between LV and Nine West. Because of her, I traded in Coach stocks cos' it was one of the "leaders" back in 2006..

Her friends told her that you have to pay up to 20% more in Singapore. Normally what her friends do is to carry the latest bags in the US for a couple of months and sell it as 2nd hand at 20% off the price in Singapore.

That sounds consistent with what I've heard so far. Not top top end, but good enough.

You caught Coach at the right time.
To my knowledge, Coach has a push into Japan during those period.
They priced themselves right. For the Jap ladies, it means buying a Coach and having excess to buy some other luxuries etc. And I guess it applies here as well.

however...it is a personal taste thing...i dont favour coach bags that much...although, the wife has a few...like all wives...and women and girls...
i think women would see Coach as a "minimum" standard accessory ... not something they would carry to attend some very classy event...
