How to avoid falling prey to financial scams

By EUGENE MAHALINGAM

To avoid being a victim to a scam, a good thing to do is to clarify the investment or business opportunity being offered.

“Only decide to invest in products or business opportunities that you can comprehend. If you find it too hard to grasp or you cannot get any clarity elsewhere, it’s best to stay away from the opportunity” .

Hong Kong expat loses HK$10 million in 3 days in computer ‘tech support’ scam

‘I saw my computer being operated by another person, impersonating me to … set up accounts on nine cryptocurrency platforms,’ victim says

by Lo Hoi-ying

Hong Kong police have warned of a rising trend of fraudsters posing as tech support staff to carry out a cyber scam targeting expatriate and English-speaking residents, with victims losing more than HK$17 million (US$2.2 million) in the last two months.

Scammers would place pop-up ads with flashing alerts and loud alarms, claiming that victims’ computers were attacked by malware, said Superintendent Baron Chan Shun-ching of the force’s cybersecurity and technology crime bureau at a press briefing on Monday.

Identity theft: Protecting yourself against SIM swapping

Criminals use personal information about their victims – phone numbers, addresses, birthdays and Social Security numbers – obtained through data breaches, leaks, dark web purchases or phishing scams to impersonate the victims as they contact their mobile carriers.

They will claim the original phone and SIM card were damaged, lost or sold accidentally and ask for the number to be associated with a new SIM, or eSIM, card in their possession.

Once this is done, the phone number belongs to the criminals, along with the ability to receive text messages or calls to verify accounts.

If you’ve been using the same or similar login information for multiple websites or online accounts, make sure to change it.

Add biometrics or multifactor authentication apps and devices that do not involve texting.
